After the Allies bogged down at Anzio and Monte Cassino, General Alexander determined on a Spring offensive - Operation Diadem - to take Monte Cassino, break the German defences of the Gustav Line, and capture Rome. The Line was successfully breached by the British Eighth and the US Fifth Armies within days of the offensiveâs opening and the subsidiary âHitler Lineâ was also broken. As a follow-up, American, Canadian and French forces broke out of the Anzio bridgehead where they had been bottled up since January. After heavy fighting, the Caesar Line, the last defence before the Italian capital, was broken and the Allies occupied Rome on 4th June. Elsewhere in the Mediterranean theatre, British special forces missions supported Marshal Titoâs partisans in attacking the German occupying forces in Yugoslavia. There are chapters on Allied strategic disagreements; the war at sea, and the allied administration of Italy. The text has two appendices and 20 maps and diagrams. We have taken the opportunity with our 2021 editions of the OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR â" UNITED KINGDOM MILITARY series to redesign the covers and print on 140g silk paper.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. The Observer's Book of Grasses, Sedges and Rushes - Observer's Book No. 7. Printer's code: 586.649 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Jun 1949. The book, which was the seventh of the series, was first published in 1942, and revised in 1947. There were four different jacket designs. Describing 100 species with 104 illustrations, 50 of which are in full colour. With a two-page Preface by the author, and a Preface to the New Edition by A.L.W., plus a six-page Introduction by A. Bruce Jackson. ***Very good in light-green woven cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked - just slightly faded along the edges. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges a little grubby through handling. Internally the book is also very good with no inscriptions or other annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No creases, but please note that a few of the illustration pages have some scuffing and surface loss near the gutter where the pages have become slightly stuck together - but none of the illustrations are affected. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just slight loss at the head and tail of the spine, and very minor loss at the corner tips. There is some rubbing, creasing and small nicks at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling - in particular some surface loss along the back panel near the spine. The back panel is also marked through handling. The spine is not faded or browned. ***147mm x 95mm. 224 pages including a three-page index at the back of the book. ***'The Observer's Books - A series of Nature books suitable for carrying in the pocket, giving short but interesting text and accurate illustrations, so that the reader can quickly recognise the natural objects met with during a walk in the country.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A 1949 reprint of the 1947 revised and extended edition, in very good original condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition, especially in the original unclipped dustwrapper. A nice early post-war copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
