Das Buch soll damit die Lücke zwischen allgemeinen Lehrbüchern zur empirischen Sozialforschung einerseits und speziellen Lehr- und Handbüchern zur Datenanalyse andererseits schließen. Über den Autor PD Dr. Rüdiger Jacob hat Soziologie, Volkswirtschaftslehre und Politologie studiert. Er wurde 1993 mit einer medizinsoziologischen Arbeit zum Thema Laienätiologischer Krankheitsvorstellungen promoviert. 2006 hat er eine Habilitationsschrift zu theoretischen und empirischen Problemen in der Sozial- und Gesundheitsberichterstattung vorgelegt und die venia legendi für Soziologie erworben. Aktuell ist er Akademischer Direktor im Fach Soziologie an der Universität Trier im Schwerpunkt Empirische Sozialforschung und Methodenlehre. Er lehrt Methoden und Techniken der empirischen Sozialforschung, Wissenschaftstheorie, Medizinsoziologie und Sozialepidemiologie. Seine Forschungsgebiete sind Medizinsoziologie und Sozialepidemiologie, Gesundheitsberichterstattung, Gesundheitssurveys und Patientenbefragungen sowie die Versorgungsforschung. Prof. Dr. Willy H. Eirmbter war Professor für Soziologie im Schwerpunkt Empirische Sozialforschung an der Universität Trier. Er ist im Jahr 2001 verstorben.
