Fine lecture de Jacques Cordier Le 4 décembre 1879. Mon cher Vincent, Il y a juste un an que je t'envoyais ma première lettre depuis ton installation au Borinage. Et je te parlai…s de ta vocation à aider les pauvres et les blessés de la vie. Bien sûr que nous avons besoin l'un de l'autre et que tu restes mon compagnon de route préféré. Tu as raison de le rappeler et il n'y a pas le moindre doute là-dessus. Mais je voudrais que tu te prennes en charge de façon plus réaliste. J'ai l'impression que tu accompagnes tes protégés dans leur calvaire sans trop te soucier de ta survie matérielle ni des questions que nous qui t'aimons nous nous posons à ton sujet. Je suis un peu déçu de lire que nos "bons conseils" donnés avec les "meilleures intentions" ne te conduiraient à rien. Te maculer le visage de cire ou de boue pour ressembler à un charbonnier ne te conduira pas beaucoup plus loin, si ce n'est te ridiculiser aux yeux des vrais travailleurs de la mine !
