Mieses played in numerous tournaments throughout his life, and was known and studied as having a very aggressive, and at the same time, rather traditional playing style. He lived in Germany until the rise of Nazism; as he was Jewish he fled Germany after Kristallnacht, even though he was elderly and had only a little bit of money in his pocket. He went on to become a UK citizen, and is credited as bring the first British grandmaster. Mieses' wit and sharpness continued to the end of his life and were credited to his dedication to physical fitness and his fondness of swimming. He remained active in England until dying just a few days shy of his 89th birthday. He continued to play regularly, and always kept a keen sense of humor. For example, at the age of 84, after defeating an 86-year-old, fellow chess master Van Foreest, Mieses famously stated, 'Youth has been victorious.'.…

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5313) Second edition.   The San Sebastian Tournaments of 1911 and 1912 were remarkable for two reasons, of which are virtually forgotten today. Organized and run by Mieses, it was the first at which all competitors were reimbursed for their fares and living expenses; it thus constituted an enormous advance in the development of chess as a profession. Secondly, it was one of the few non-FIDE events for which a special qualification was demanded. Only those master were invited who had won at least two fourth prizes. But with the number of competitors coming to a smaller total than twelve it was decided to hold it as a double round event. Of the eleven who played, nine had also played in 1911. Only two players, Dr Perlis, who was to die tragically and prematurely in a mountaineering accident the very next year, and Forgacs were new comers. Forgacs in fact fell ill and withdrew after the first cycle had been completed. Spielmann started off in wonderful style and, by the end of the first half of the tournament, he was leading by a full two points. But he fell away badly in the second half while Rubinstein, who in direct contrast to Spielmann started miserably, yet managed to recover and pull up to the leaders and pass them just in time for the last round.
