Forse nemmeno Andersen si rendeva conto, mentre si accingeva a scrivere il romanzo L'improvvisatore, che avrebbe finito per dare vita non a uno ma almeno a quattro o cinque romanzi paralleli. Questa dilatazione del progetto iniziale d…i un romanzo-come-viaggio-sentimentale, ha prodotto un libro complesso e stratificato, un unicum narrativo che si sviluppa su una spinta di natura emotiva, ma sicuramente anche sulla consapevolezza che la narrativa può essere un portentoso contenitore delle idee, dei fatti, sentimenti, descrizioni, sogni, malinconie e invenzioni che rifiutano ogni definizione e gabbia razionale così come la rifiuta l'idea del mondo e della sua sostanza. Scrivere a quelle condizioni poteva apparire come un gesto di suprema arroganza e trovare la sua giustificazione solo in una morbosa timidezza o in una esaltata ingenuità giovanile. L'improvvisatore si può leggere infatti non solo come romanzo, ma come il terminale di frustrazioni non tanto solari, luogo di dispersioni e disguidi sentimentali cresciuti a dismisura su una esperienza esaltante e rivelatrice come il viaggio in Italia. La sua geometria difforme si può ascrivere più semplicemente a un eccesso di progettazione che aveva indotto l'autore ad accumulare materiali in sovrabbondanza e a organizzarli poi in questa unica tessitura. The view shows the ruins of the bridge of Augustus over the River Nera with the hill-top town of Narni visible in the background. Jacob Philipp or Johann Philipp Hackert was born…in Prenzlau. He travelled extensively within Europe and was one of a group of artists who achieved a notable degree of success with their images of picturesque landscapes. He spent a great deal of his time in Italy, particularly Rome, Florence and Naples. He worked both for Catherine the Great of Russia and for King Ferdinand of Naples. His brother Georg Hackert (1755-1805) accompanied him to Naples and set up as an engraver and print-seller in 1786.

Scena animata da numerose figure di orientali sul molo, uomini e donne; la fortezza vecchia si profila sulla destra, le imbarcazioni sono disposte in modo parallelo; al centro della composizione, in secondo piano, alcune architetture basse sopra uno scoglio e la torre del Marzocco; chiude l'orizzonte, al di la della vasta ansa della baia, una vasta catena di montagne. Tenue impressione, rifilato il margine inferiore alla battuta, nell'insieme comunque buona. .

Philipp Jakob Hackert (Prenzlau, 1737 Firenze, 1807), di origine tedesca, fu ottimo pittore. Fin da giovane compì numerosi viaggi in Italia e si stabilì definitivamente a Roma verso il 1768. Divenne pittore di corte del re di Napoli e nel 1780 realizzò il famoso ciclo di dipinti "Dieci vedute della Casa di Campagna di Orazio". Celebri le pitture raffiguranti la Reggia di Caserta. Tranne alcune brevi imperfezioni al margine superiore, ottimo esemplare in bella morsura e ampi margini.

Wie man bei Goethe nachlesen kann, unternahm Hackert im Jahr 1764 eine Reise nach Schweden: Im Mai 1764 reiste Baron Olthoff nach Stockholm, wohin er Hackert mit sich nahm und bei Hofe bekannt machte. Der fleißige Künstler sammelte sich wieder ein Menge Studien, () verfertigte mehrere Zeichnungen für die Königin, und ging mit Aufträgen von Baron Olthoff im September wieder nach Stralsund zurück." (J.W. von Goethe, Werke. Sophien-Ausgabe. Weimar 1891, Band 46 (Winckelmann, Philipp Hackert), S. 118-119). In den Werkstätten seines Vaters Philipp Hackert hat Hackert bereits die Grundlagen für seine künstlerische Ausbildung erworben. 1758 setzte er sein Studium an der Zeichenklasse der Königl. Akademie in Berlin fort, die von Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur (1714-1783) geleitet wurde. Hier trat er mit seinen ersten Landschaften mit Motiven aus dem Berliner Tiergarten hervor. 1762 reiste er als Begleiter des schwedischen Regierungsrats Friedrich von Olthoff nach Stralsund, auf die Insel Rügen und nach Stockholm., wo er verschiedene Aufträge ausführte. 1765 brach er zu einem mehrjährigen Aufenthalt nach Paris auf. Dort war er in der engeren Umgebung von Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) tätig und es bestand auch ein näherer Kontakt zu dem Landschafts- und Marinemaler Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Auf Studienreisen in die Normandie entstanden zahlreiche Skizzen. 1768 ließ sich Hackert zusammen mit seinem Bruder Johann Gottlieb (1744-1773), mit dem er eng zusammenarbeitete, in Rom nieder. Hier gehörte er zu dem Kreis um Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807) und den Hofrat Johann Friedrich von Reiffenstein (1719-1793) an. Zu dieser Zeit war Hackert bereits zu einem international gefragten Künstler avanciert. 1770 besuchte er zum ersten Mal Neapel. 1777 bereiste er mit Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) und Charles Gore (1729-1807) Sizilien. Nach seiner Ernennung zum Hofmaler des Königs von Neapel, Ferdinand IV., 1786 verlegte er seinen Wohnsitz nach Neapel. Auch von hier aus widmete er sich auf regelmäßigen Studienreisen bzw. Wanderungen dem Landschaftsstudium. Auf seiner italienischen Reise lernte Goethe 1787 Hackert in Neapel kennen und ließ sich von dem von ihm geschätzten Künstler im Zeichnen unterrichten. Als auch in Neapel revolutionäre Unruhen ausbrachen und die Franzosen in das Königreich einmarschierten, floh Hackert nach Oberitalien und verbrachte weiterhin tätig seine letzten Lebensjahre in der Toskana.

Nach erstem Unterricht bei seinem Vater Phil…ipp (gest. 1786) und seinem Onkel Johann Gottlieb Hackert, einem Berliner Maler, besuchte Jakob Philipp ab 1758 die Berliner Akademie. Die Jahre 1765-1768 verbrachte er gemeinsam mit Balthasar Anton Dunker (1746-1807) in Paris, wo ihn besonders die Maler Claude Joseph I. Vernet (1714-1789) und Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) prägten. 1768 reiste Hackert gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Johann Gottlieb (1755-1805) nach Rom, wo er die wichtigen Kunstmäzene Johann Friedrich Reiffenstein und William Hamilton kennenlernte. In den nächsten Jahren bereiste er ganz Italien, wo er rasch großen Erfolg als Landschaftsmaler hatte und zahlreiche Aufträge durch den europäischen Adel erhielt. 1786 ging er nach Neapel, wo er Hofmaler von König Ferdinand IV. wurde. Dort traf Hackert in diesem Jahr auch Goethe, der Zeichenunterricht bei ihm nahm. Infolge des Lazzaroni-Aufstandes mußte Hackert aus Neapel fliehen und ließ sich nach Aufenthalten in Livorno und Pisa schließlich in Florenz nieder.

In den Werkstätten seines Vaters Philipp Hackert hat Hackert bereits die Grundlagen für seine künstlerische Ausbildung erworben. 1758 setzte er sein Studium an der Zeichenklasse der Königl. Akademie in Berlin fort, die von Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur (1714-1783) geleitet wurde. Hier trat er mit seinen ersten Landschaften mit Motiven aus dem Berliner Tiergarten hervor. 1762 reiste er als Begleiter des schwedischen Regierungsrats Friedrich von Olthof nach Stralsund, auf die Insel Rügen und nach Stockholm., wo er verschiedene Aufträge ausführte. 1765 brach er zu einem mehrjährigen Aufenthalt nach Paris auf. Dort war er in der engeren Umgebung von Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) tätig und es bestand auch ein näherer Kontakt zu dem Landschafts- und Marinemaler Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Auf Studienreisen in die Normandie entstanden zahlreiche Skizzen. 1768 ließ sich Hackert zusammen mit seinem Bruder Johann Gottlieb (1744-1773), mit dem er eng zusammenarbeitete, in Rom nieder. Hier gehörte er zu dem Kreis um Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807) und den Hofrat Johann Friedrich von Reiffenstein (1719-1793) an. Zu dieser Zeit war Hackert bereits zu einem international gefragten Künstler avanciert. 1770 besuchte er zum ersten Mal Neapel. 1777 bereiste er mit Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) und Charles Gore (1729-1807) Sizilien. Nach seiner Ernennung zum Hofmaler des Königs von Neapel, Ferdinand IV., 1786 verlegte er seinen Wohnsitz nach Neapel. Auch von hier aus widmete er sich auf regelmäßigen Studienreisen bzw. Wanderungen dem Landschaftsstudium. Auf seiner italienischen Reise lernte Goethe 1787 Hackert in Neapel kennen und ließ sich von dem von ihm geschätzten Künstler im Zeichnen unterrichten. Als auch in Neapel revolutionäre Unruhen ausbrachen und die Franzosen in das Königreich einmarschierten, floh Hackert nach Oberitalien und verbrachte weiterhin tätig seine letzten Lebensjahre in der Toskana.
