Single Issue Magazine. Condition: Very Good. Robert L. Lipman, A.C. Lovekin, J.S. Hutchinson, James K. Moffitt, Ansel F. Hall, Frank A. Williamson, C.O. Schneider, W. Harris, Con L. Grover, Frederick H. Morley, Walter L. Huber, Chester Versteeg (illustrator). First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1923. First Edition. Vol XI, No. 4, for 1923. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year - monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 115 pp. + numerous unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a fold-out map (Grouse Meadows to Vidette Meadow) and a fold-out wide-angle photograph by W.H. Wright. Gray stapled wraps, rather than the usual medium brown. Very Good; circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Some damage at inside front hinge area, and some spine sunning and abrasion. A handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others, including Robert L. Lipman, A.C. Lovekin, J.S. Hutchinson, James K. Moffitt, Ansel F. Hall, Frank A. Williamson, C.O. Schneider, W. Harris (an 1867 shot), Con L. Grover, Frederick H. Morley, Walter L. Huber, Chester Versteeg and several uncredited artists. SC2.

House doc.], 33.OCLC 29139384.Patrick Magruder (1768-1819) was the second Librarian of Congress and served in that capacity from 1807-1815. He served both as the Clerk of the House and as Librarian of Congress as had his predecessor. Magruder had the misfortune of serving in those capacities at the time the Capitol of the United States was burned by the British during the War of 1812. At the time of the burning of the Capitol in August of 1814 Magruder was absent from Washington, D.C. for health reasons. .He left the Office of the House and the Library of Congress in the charge of his brother George Magruder and two assistants. In addition to the books in the Library of Congress Patrick Magruder's office records which included the financial records of the House of Representative were destroyed. A Congressional investigation into Magruder's handling of Congressional funds found discrepancies including a shortage of $20,000. .Although Magruder managed to avoid prosecution for his actions, he resigned on January 28, 1815. I have in my collection an 1814 government publication which contains a letter from Patrick Magruder to the Speaker of the House in defense of his actions which in turn includes an account by two office assistants of the events leading to the destruction of the Office of the House and the Library of Congress. Their account says in part, "every thing belonging to the office, together with the library of congress, we venture to say, might have been removed in time, if carriages could have been procured, but it was altogether impossible to procure them, either for hire or by force." After Magruder's resignation the positions of Clerk of the House and Librarian of Congress were separated. different broadside from Marshall. From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.

(illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, lxvi, 407pp. Original binding, title in gilt on black morocco label affixed to spine. New endpapers, reinforcing text block. Untrimmed edges. Solid text block, worn corners, some chipping to edges of spine. Faint foxing to edges of leaves, clear and legible text. (Evans 32491) (Howes M-727) (Sabin 50020). A View of the Conduct of the Executive is a defense by Monroe of his United States Ambassador to the French Republic. James Monroe (1758-1831) held many positions before his presidency, including Minister to France. Monroe faced criticism from George Washington's administration that he was not adequately defending the Jay Treaty (between the United States and Great Britain, ensuring Commerce and Navigation) while in France. President Washington knew that Monroe was about to publish this book, so he asked Secretary of State Tim Pickering for a copy before publication. Washington made remarks in the margins of his copy, stating he "thoroughly disapproved of it and its author.".
