Before his tenure at Bryn Mawr, Rhoads was enga…ged in racial justice and education, co-founding the Hampton Institute in Virginia to support the education of African Americans. He also co-founded the Indian Rights Association in 1882, advocating for Native American civil and educational rights. His work bridged Quaker values, progressive education, and civic reform, culminating in his election to the American Philosophical Society (APS) in 1893. This carte-de-visite identifies his full standing length portrait in pencil and may be autographed by Rhoads himself. This carte-de-visite features a full standing portrait of James E.
