From the preface : "[T]he present volumes represent the first instalment of the Catalogue of the Western Manuscripts, and describe the first group of the Latin rolls and codices which are almost exclusively written in the book hand.The actual nucleus of the collection of manuscripts described in this volume consists of those acquired from Earl Spencer with the Althorp Library, purchased by Mrs. Rylands in 1892. They are, however, few in number (little over twenty), and of slight importance in comparison with the great accession that came with the purchase, in 1901, of the manuscripts of the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, formerly at Haigh Hall.
