A scholarly monograph on the two principal Renaissance printer-publishers of Poznań, Melchior Nering and Jan Wolrab, examining their book illustration and typographic ornament within the wider context of sixteenth-century Wielkopolska printing culture. Chapter I surveys the state of the book trade and bookselling in Poznań before the establishment of printing houses there, including the 1505 privilege granted to the Kraków printer Jan Haller restricting local printing and its effect on the delayed emergence of a Poznań pres. Chapter II treats the careers of Nering and Wolrab; Chapter III offers a detailed inventory and analysis of Nering's typographic and decorative stock, arguing for its more thoroughly Renaissance character; Chapter IV analyzes the press of Wolrab and his successors, with particular attention to two major devotional works, the bilingual seasonal postils ("Postille Katholiczna Mnieysza" and "Część Wtora, Letnia"), examining borders, cartouches, initials, and evangelist scenes in comparison with contemporary domestic and foreign woodcut production.
