Na zijn terugroeping leefde hij tot 1807 als ambteloos burger op zijn landgoed Linschoten, waarna hij naar Duitsland verhuisde waar hij tot zijn dood in verschillende steden leefde. Strick stond zeer critisch ten opzichte van zijn vaderland en, na 1813, tegen de monarchale regering van Willem I.
