Printed title and 50 lithographic plates, engraved by Adolphe and Dollet after Pingret, WITH WONDERFUL PERIOD HAND COLOURING HEIGHTENED WITH GUM ARABIC. The complete Italian suite of plates from the series Galerie Royale de Costume. This rare series, with a total of approximately 200 lithographs, was published in issues- each section was dedicated to a specific nation. The present issue, made up of 50 plates, shows the costumes of Italy, with each plate accompanied by a caption describing where the subject come from. There is no auction record of a complete copy and the bibliography Colas (1163) says no complete copy is known. Colas also says the complete series should be 245 plates but the German bibliography Lipperheide (60) says 201 plates. HOWEVER ALL AGREE THE ITALIAN SECTION IS COMPLETE WITH 50 PLATES. A VERY SCARCE COLOUR PLATE BOOK with decorative and large costume prints. Mostly covering the Kingdom of Naples and Rome. The artist - Édouard-Henri-Théophile Pingret (1788 1875) was a French painter and lithographer.
