Rare The Hungarian poet János Csokits, who has died aged 83, will always be better known as Ted Hughes's co-translator of another 20th-century Hungarian poet, János Pilinszky. In this, he is reminiscent of Edward Fitzgerald, a poet whose own verse is largely forgotten, but who lives in literary memory as the ingenious translator of Omar Khayyám's Rubáiyát. Born in Budapest into a middle-class family, Csokits began studying law at the Péter Pázmány University there in 1946. He was unable to finish his studies as he left the country in the spring of 1949, when Hungary was plunged into a communist dictatorship. From 1950, he lived in Paris, where he wrote for the Hungarian section of Radio Free Europe, which he joined eventually in Munich in 1963, first as a news analyst and then as an editor. In 1974 he switched to the BBC in London and served on the Hungarian desk until his retirement in 1986, when he moved to Andorra. Soon after the 1989 change of regime in Hungary, Csokits returned to his homeland, settling down in relative obscurity in Tata, near Budapest. Also included is the famous poem (one page) A Sentence from Tyranny by Gyula Illyes. Illyés (1902 ¿ 1983) was a Hungarian poet and novelist. He was one of the so-called népi ("from the people") writers, named so because they aimed to show ¿ propelled by strong sociological interest and left-wing convictions ¿ the disadvantageous conditions of their native land. On 2 November 1956 he published his famous poem of the Hungarian revolution of 1956, which was not allowed to be republished in Hungary until 1986: "One sentence on tyranny" is a long poem written in 1950. Hungarian text entirely. Domestic Turkish radio comments span 23 Nov to 9 Dec 1956. One pamphlet is rat chewed (a Stalin rat?).

Due to its importance in biotechnology, medicine and foods, Aspergilli are in the forefront of studies dealing with various aspects of fungi. This is well illustrated by the fact that projects aiming at sequencing the genomes of nine species are in progress. In this book, some aspects of the biology of this genus are covered, including the biotechnological importance of Aspergilli, their role in mycotoxin contamination of food products including grapes and coffee products, and implications of biodiversity of Aspergillus populations for agriculture. Among the clinical aspects, the role of Aspergilli in eye infections, the mechanisms of antifungal drug resistance and their molecular identification in the clinical setting are covered. Several chapters deal with the genomic aspects of Aspergilli, including the genomics of pigment biosynthesis, extracellular enzyme production, aflatoxin biosynthesis and the identification of genes taking part in sexual processes. Additional chapters cover the variability and inheritance of mycoviruses in Aspergilli and multilocus approaches are given to clarify the evolutionary history of the genus. Finally, a new taxonomic classification of the various Aspergillus sections is given based on multilocus sequence data.
