Minder aandacht is er voor hetgeen de remonstranten overkwam in de turbulente jaren rond deze kerkvergadering. Uitzondering hierop vormt nog altijd de His…torie der Reformatie, het vierdelige werk van de remonstrantse predikant en geschiedschrijver Gerard Brandt (1626-1685). Aan de hand van vele en veelsoortige bronnen heeft Brandt de lotgevallen van zijn geloofsgenoten gedetailleerd gedocumenteerd en beschreven. 'In de schaduw van Dordt [1618-1619]' heeft als doel in het herdenkingsjaar van de roemruchte kerkvergadering te Dordrecht de aandacht te richten op de rol van remonstranten in het politiek-religieuze conflict in die periode, met steeds weer als uitgangspunt het geschiedwerk dat nog altijd het opus magnum van Brandt mag heten. Naast een biografische schets van Gerard Brandt komen in deze studie andere componenten aan bod: 'voorgeschiedenis' van de Historie der Reformatie, oogmerk, vormgeving en afbakening in tijd en ruimte waarbinnen het werk van Brandt zich afspeelt. Naar eigen zeggen heeft Brandt op basis van gedegen bronnenonderzoek eerlijk gestreefd naar objectiviteit en waarheid. Over het 'Ooghmerk' van zijn geschiedschrijving heeft Brandt terdege nagedacht. Brandt geloofde ook in verscheidenheid. Als geschiedschrijver had hij een geoefend oog voor historische persoonlijkheden van allerlei kerkelijke signatuur, die zich in confessioneel opzicht hebben weten te onderscheiden, onder meer als voorlopers. In een afzonderlijk hoofdstuk wordt aandacht besteed aan zeven door Brandt met empathie beschreven exponenten van gewetensvrijheid en verdraagzaamheid: Desiderius Erasmus, Georgius Cassander, Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert, Hubert Duifhuis, Franciscus Junius, Jacobus Arminius en Caspar Barlaeus die allemaal anders dachten en hebben geloofd. In het door Brandt geboden relaas van de Nationale Synode van Dordt wordt telkens weer ingegaan op confrontaties tussen remonstranten en contraremonstranten; er is volle aandacht voor de rol van hun leiders, met name die van de prominente remonstrantse voorman Simon Episcopius versus de synodevoorzitter Johannes Bogerman. Brandt biedt de lezer in vertaling tal van synodale documenten die hij als uitkomsten en besluiten van deze kerkvergadering toelicht. Ook de wording van de Remonstrantse Broederschap of Sociëteit (september 1619) wordt gememoreerd evenals de daarbij gebleken weerbaarheid van de remonstranten in de jaren na Dordt. Een weinig geslaagde remonstrantse volksplanting in Frederiksstad (Holstein) wordt niet vergeten. Voorts is er aandacht voor een niet tot stand gekomen samengaan met de 'Arminiaans' voelende lutheranen, die overigens niet vervolgd werden. Een nabeschouwing op het wedervaren van remonstranten vanaf Dordt tot op heden, besluit deze studie over een man die als geen ander in goed zeventiende-eeuws Nederlands boeiend, want in geuren en kleuren, wist te vertellen.
