Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No dust jacket, Blue cloth boards have minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Jean Barbot, who served as a commercial agent on French slave-trading voyages to West Africa in 1678-9 and 1681-2, in 1683 began an account of the Guinea coast, based partly on his voyage journals (o…nly one of which is extant) and partly on previous printed sources. The work was interrupted by his flight to England, as a Huguenot refugee, in 1685, and not finished until 1688. When Barbot found that his lengthy French account could not be published, he rewrote it in English, enlarging it even further, and then continually revising it up to his death in 1712. The manuscript was eventually published in 1732. Barbot's book had considerable influence on later European attitudes to Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade and in modern writings on both subjects is frequently cited as evidence. The French account serves as the base for the present edition and is presented in English translation but additional material in the later English version is inserted. The edition concentrates on Barbot's original information. He copied much from earlier sources - this derived material is omitted but is identified in the notes. The original material, mainly on Senegal, Sierra Leone, River Sess, Gold Coast and the Calabars, is extensively annotated, not least with comparative references to other sources. Apart from its narrative interest, the edition thus provides a starting point for the critical assessment of a range of early sources on Guinea. The edition opens with an introductory essay discussing Barbot's life and career and analysing his sources. Barbot provided a large number of his own drawings of topographical and ethnographical features, in particular drawings of almost all of the European forts in Guinea. Many of these illustrations are reproduced. This volume covers the coast from Senegal to Gold Coast. The main pagination of this and the following volume (Second series 176) series is continuous.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xx + 418 pages, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show regular handling wear, several short scratches. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Contents: 1 Novel sliding mode algorithms… [Lyapunov approach to higher-order sliding mode design; Sliding surface design for higher-order sliding modes; Robust output control of systems subjected to perturbations via high-order sliding modes observation and identification; Construction of Lyapunov functions for high-order sliding modes]; 2 Properties of sliding mode algorithms [Homogeneity of differential inclusions; Minimax observer for sliding mode control design; L2-Gain analysis of sliding mode dynamics; Analysis of transient motions in variable-structure systems through the dynamic harmonic balance principle]; 3 Discretization of sliding-mode controllers [On discretization of high-order sliding modes; Experimental results on implicit and explicit time-discretization of equivalent control-based sliding mode control; A generalized reaching law for discrete-time sliding mode]; 4 Applications [Conventional and adaptive second-order sliding mode control of a wind energy conversion system; Sliding mode control of a fuel cell-based electric power system: multiple modular configurations; Networked model-based event-triggered sliding mode control; Step-by-step super-twisting observer for DC series motor in the presence of magnetic saturation; Sliding mode control of LCL full-bridge rectifiers; Adaptive solutions for robust control of electropneumatic actuators]; Index -- In control theory, sliding mode control, or SMC, is a nonlinear control method that alters the dynamics of a nonlinear system by application of a discontinuous control signal that forces the system to 'slide' along a cross-section of the system's normal behaviour. This book describes recent advances in the theory, properties, methods and applications of SMC. The book is organised into four parts. The first part is devoted to the design of higher-order sliding-mode controllers, with specific designs presented in the context of disturbance rejection by means of observation and identification. The second part offers a set of tools for establishing different dynamic properties of systems with discontinuous right-hand sides. Time discretization is addressed in the third part. First-order sliding modes are discretized using an implicit scheme - higher-order sliding-mode differentiators, typically used in output-feedback schemes, are discretized in such a way that the optimal accuracy of their continuous-time counterparts is restored. The last part is dedicated to applications. In the context of energy conversion, sliding-mode control is applied to variable-speed wind turbines, fuel cell coupled to a power converter, rugged DC series motors and rectifiers with unity power factor, and electropneumatic actuator. Finally, an event-triggered sliding-mode scheme is proposed for networked control systems subject to packet loss, jitter and delayed transmissions.
