La plupart des grands auteurs modernes, de Claudel à Montherlant, de Sartre à Camus, d'Eugène Ionesco à Michel de Ghelderode, traitent le drame de la condition humaine. Et le plus souvent, ce drame, à notre époque, mène à la révolte. Jean Anouilh, disciple de Jean Giraudoux, situe ce drame sur le plan de l'amour. Homme de théâtre s'il en fut (car, avec André Roussin, il est un des rares auteurs contemporains à se consacrer entièrement et exclusivement au théâtre), Anouilh classe volontiers ses pièces par groupes : pièces roses, pièces noires, pièces brillantes, pièces grinçantes. Mais toutes, ou presque, clament la nostalgie de la pureté, affirment l'existence d'un destin inévitable, prônent le bonheur simple et sans complications, constentatent l'impossibilité d'une union véritable entre les hommes. A bon droit on a dit d'Anouilh qu'il est profondément pessimiste. A moins que, bien sûr, ce pessimisme ne soit que de la clairvoyance. La renommée d'Anouilh ne se limite pas à la France: on a joué et on joue toujours ses pièces, avec un très grand succès, à Londres, à Berlin, à Rome, à New-York, à Moscou. Ce succès, il faut l'attribuer d'une part à son sens inné de l'art théâtral, d'autre part au fait qu'il traite le thème de la révolte, propre à notre siècle. Jean Anouilh est né à Bordeaux, le 23 juin 1910. Il épousa l'actrice Monelle Valentin qui a souvent joué le rôle principal de ses pièces.…
