Da die biblische Darstellung… der Epoche ein aus spaterer Sicht polemisch eingefarbtes Bild konstruiert, stutzt sich die Studie vorwiegend auf zeitgenossische archaologische und epigraphische Zeugnisse. Ausgehend von einem in der Religionswissenschaft eingefuhrten Drei-Ebenen-Modell (Staats- oder Dynastiekult, regionaler Kult, Hauskult) wird vorgeschlagen, die mittlere Ebene der Kultpraxis noch einmal zu differenzieren und regionale Kulte von lokalen Kulten zu unterscheiden. Der durch neuere Ausgrabungen im Norden Palastinas ausgewiesene Kult am Stadttor reprasentiert eine Variante des regionalen Kults, wohingegen kleinere Kultraume innerhalb von Stadtanlagen auf eine spezifische Ausgestaltung des lokalen Kults hinweisen.
