NEAR FINE condition, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Copies of this catalog are rarely found INSCRIBED by the artist. A nice bibliophilic association copy. About JESS (from Wikipedia): ******Jess Collins, b.1923 d.2004, known today simply as Jess, was an American visual artist. He met Robert Duncan in 1950 and began a relationship with the poet that lasted for 37 years until Duncan's death in 1988. The two men lived and worked for decades from their historic Victorian home in the Mission District, "a wonderland of an old house, filled to the roof with art". Jess's art received international attention with solo exhibitions at the The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1974), the Galleria Odyssia in Rome (1975), the Wadsworth Atheneum[11] (1975), the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (1977), the Berkeley Art Museum (1980), and The Arts Club of Chicago (1981). In 2019, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art mounted the show "Mythos, Psyche, Eros: Jess and California", which paired paintings and collages: "that privileged the mystical, whimsical, and absurd" by "one of San Francisco's most enigmatic figures.". This copy has been signed by Jess and inscribed to Tom (Raworth). Signed by Artist.

A beautifully designed artist…'s book with child-like drawings reproduced in black and white. Comes with a loosely inserted letter from the Odyssia Gallery, addressed to the professor and writer Dawn Ades. Jess Collins known today simply as Jess, was an American visual artist. Jess was born Burgess Franklin Collins in Long Beach, California. He was drafted into the military and worked on the production of plutonium for the Manhattan Project. After his discharge in 1946, Jess worked at the Hanford Atomic Energy Project in Richland, Washington, and painted in his spare time, but his dismay at the threat of atomic weapons led him to abandon his scientific career and focus on his art.

A superior association copy, SIGNED with a full-page inscription by Robert Duncan to Jonathan Williams (publisher of Jargon Press) on the first leaf: "A Prefa…ce Preface for J. W.: Digging for the foundations to be laid, the workers came upon Roman and even Greek arty facts [sic] that betrayed an old affair du coeur preserved by lava flows and impacted ashes. It was a tongue touching an old truth to test the ache of it now turnd to a roseate nostalgia. The initials entwined with hair and vines (fruits and roses superimposed) were only partially decipherable and in linear Greek Z, a code as yet unbroken. Poets have however a Field Day over such remnants. Carbon tests revealed it was years ago in any event. R.D." Duncan wrote the Preface to Williams's "Elegies and Celebrations," and Williams published Duncan's "Letters: Poems MCMLIII-MCMLVI" in 1958 as Jargon 14. A meaningful copy.

A lovely copy of this children's book of sorts profusely illustrated by Jess. A scarce book signed, and this to Covici who was a Berkeley librarian, noted collector and active particpant in the San Francisco gay culture of the 60's. ANACAPA A40. Signed.

Quarto (28.75cm); full natural beige calf, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [4],5-37…,[7]pp; illus. A full-page inscription to John and Barbara Martin more of an original poem, really appears on the verso of the colophon: "Wednesday / October 16 / For Barbara and John / Our do and derive pleasures / Once more / Blue makes los angeles brighter in blue / with room for a bay we return to her too / Barbara and John Martin are a new installation / In our remembrances / Two / We salute him among los Juans del pueblo / We salute Barbara with harmonica and banjo / We serenade a serene air and add an aid for memory / Spanish lessons from / We do not know Spanish / Later another Stein song sung in Spanish / Barbara and Juan Martin in disguise / Add to our names of people / This is a Martin disguised as a swallow / Black as a sparrow / Which sparrow / In leather / For size / A large and de luxe Sparrow / RD." On the opposing page is a full-page original composition by Jess Collins, involving ink illustrations of musicians playing the banjo and harmonica, and a woman on a balcony being serenaded by a large black sparrow, standing atop a pile of books; five sections of cut-and-pasted text have been incorporated into the artwork, which compliments Duncan's poem beautifully and harmoniously. Gentle sunning to spine, upper and lower board edges, with some mild rubbing to spine ends and lower corners; contents fresh; Near Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket.
