"The iconic Finnish-American father-son architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen may be most famous for buildings such as the Helsinki Central Railway Station (Eliel), the Cranbrook Academy of Arts (Eliel), The Gateway Arch in St. Louis (Eero), the TWA terminal in JFK Airport (Eero), and many other landmarks, but they also designed a number of remarkable houses, including Eero Saarinen's Miller House, one of the most significant examples of modern domestic architecture in the United States. Eliel and Eero Saarinen: Houses presents seventeen of the houses designed by the Saarinens, from Eliel's early twentieth-century Villa Pulkanranta, an eclectic mix of local Finnish design traditions and international influences; to Eliel's famous Art-Deco house at Cranbrook; to the architects' collaborative Koebel House, with its strong, horizontal lines; to the Loja Saarinen House, which Eero designed for his mother" "Saarinen Houses presents seventeen of the houses designed by the iconic father-son architects. Including original drawings and archival photos, as well as a wealth of newly taken photographs, the book highlights both the commonalities and differences in the two architects' works. From Eliel Saarinen's early-twentieth-century Villa Pulkanranta, an eclectic mix of local Finnish design traditions and international influences, to Eliel's famous Art-Deco house at Cranbrook, to the duo's collaborative Koebel House, with its strong, horizontal exterior, to Eero's Miller House, one of the most significant examples of modern domestic architecture in the United States, Eliel and Eero Saarinen: Houses shows how the development of new interests and techniques became manifest in the design of these residences. Regardless of style, all of these buildings are based in the Saarinens' belief in architecture as as a total work of art--that a building must be designed both inside and out and be seen in relation to the landscape it sits in. All of the houses have carefully designed interior and blend and merge into their surroundings in a natural manner, rewarding their inhabitants with exciting views, inviting nooks, comfortable chairs to sit in, and rooms heated with fireplaces. As these pages show, both architects were extremely skilled at creating a balanced domestic environment through harmoniously designed rooms and carefully considered details" Text in English. 224 pp. Inscription on the flyleaf. The over 150 projects featured in the book are great architecture in miniature. The carefully crafted scale models of these landmark works of both Finnish and international 20th century architecture tell not only of the importance of the schemes themselves but also of the rich tradition of craftsmanship. Parallel to contemporary computer modelling, scale models have an important role in architectural design. This can be seen, for instance, in the scale models of modernist masterpieces in house design built by architecture students in Tokyo and Helsinki featured in the book along with the work of Jari Jetsonen. The seven articles in Little Big Houses shed light, each in their own way, on the problematics of architectural design and model building.

Text in English. 118 pp. There is something essentially Finnish about Alvar Aalto's summer villas, something modest and informal - something that expresses the traditional Finnish way of spending one's free time with relatives and friends. Alvar Aalto Summer Homes presents small, intimate and personal summer houses and saunas designed by Aalto early works as well as later ones that have been published only rarely. Included are two summer homes that Aalto designed and built for himself: Villa Flora (designed together with Aino Aalto), from Aalto's early production, and the world-famous Experimantal House in Muuratsalo. The summer homes featured in the book were designed by Aalto for his relatives, close friends or clients for whom he already designed larger commissions. Villa Vekara, the Korpikoto Hunting Lodge, Villa Kihlman, the Enso Gutreit Country Club and Sauna, Villa Eino Manner and Villa Oksala were all individually designed and took into account the wishes of the client. As Aalto wrote in his well-known article "From doorstep to living room" (1926): "But if you want my blessing for your home, it should have one further characteristic: you must give yourself away in some little detail." Alvar Aalto Summer Homes is the third part in the Rakennustieto series of books devoted to Aalto's housing designs and it complements the picture of an architect who despite his international career preserved a genuine touch for Finnish nature and the Finnish way of life.

Our entire culture rests on the nature ofour dwellings, stated Alvar Aalto in a lecture he delivered in Munich in 1957. During the course of a career spanning over 50 years, Aalto designed a total of nearly 100 single-family houses, apartments blocks, student dormitories and summer homes. Many of thern are architectural gems, in which his thoughts about dwelling and architecture converge. Aalto considered experimental building to be very important: in his opinion, there should always be an opportunity for experimentation in every project, for it is only in that way that architecture can be promoted and quality improved for the good of the "little man" Alvar Aalto Homes presents 30 homes designed by Aalto from the 1920s to the end of the 196os built in Finland, the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Estonia and France many of them Well-krown buildings but also those rarely if ever presented. Among them are the fabled Villa Mairea and Maison Louis Carré, a modest standard house built for ex-servicemen and compact apartment blocks and row houses such as the Standard terrace housing in Kauttua, Finland, the Typpi Oy row house in Oulu, Finland and the Neue Vahr apartment building in Bremen, Germany. Aalto's own house in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki, and his summer home, the so-called Experimental House in Muuratsalo, reveal the intimate side of the Aalto family's life as well as the endless experiments with which Aalto tested his ideas. Jari Jetsonen's fine full-colour pictures ? many of them taken especially for this book ? and Aalto's original drawings beautifully convey the special features of each house, Sirkkalisa Jetsonen's descriptions of the homes are complimented by Jussi Rautsi's essay that tells the story about the wonderfu| Aalto partnerships: Alvar and his spouses Aino and Elissa. The foreword to the book has been written by esteemed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
