Hardcover. Blue DJ with black and white lettering and illustration; green and white illustrated boards with white lettering; 211 pp.; richly illustrated, chiefly in color. Since the late 1970s, as a pioneer of Southern California underground culture, Raymond Pettibon has blurred the boundaries of "high" and "low," from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics and sexuality. Rich in detail, his obsessively worked drawings pull freely from myriad sources spanning the cultural spectrum. The resulting, highly poetic constructions function as acute reflections of contemporary society. Throughout the years, his subjects have included political figures and historical events, with particular intensity since the events of September 11, 2001. Seen here are images of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, J. Edgar Hoover, both Bush presidents, the Kennedys, Hitler, scenes from the Vietnam War and protest movements, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the prisoner abuse of Abu Ghraib, President Obama and Osama bin Laden. Raymond Pettibon (born 1957) studied economics at UCLA around the same time he joined his brother in the punk band Black Flag. He soon began to contribute artwork to album covers, flyers and t-shirts, for the band and its label, SST Records, and exhibited his work in group shows in galleries in the 1980s. Since the 1990s his work has been the subject of numerous major solo exhibitions. -- WorldCat. Good (Ex-Library from Visual Studies Workshop with stocker on DJ spine and rear pastedown; boards are lightly edgeworn/scuffed/smudged; textblock edge has light smudges; interior is clean; binding is solid.) Good (Library sticker to spine; DJ is edgeworn/scuffed/smudged.).

Paperback. Condition: New. This textbook introduces biology as an interdisciplinary science, linking physics and chemistry to biological processes that operate within the laws of thermodynamics. Based on an evolutionary narrative, the focus is on the molecular composition and the biochemistry of cells. By grounding biology in its molecular foundations, this approach reveals unifying principles underlying life's diversity and provides a conceptual framework for biological complexity. Core concepts include macromolecular structure and function, information encoding and decoding, and universal principles of energy conversion.Key Features Reflects a novel biology teaching approach Uses evolution as the unifying framework Introduces a narrative towards complexity in life Bridges chemistry and physics to make molecular biology accessible Focuses on bacteria and archaea as the simplest life forms to illustrate fundamental principles Progresses from molecules through molecular interactions to cellular processes Highlights key biological concepts with summaries and reflective questions This textbook is designed for students seeking an integrated introduction to biology that connects molecular mechanisms to cellular structures.
