Johan van Beverwyck (1594-1647) was a prominent Dutch physician and author who played a key role in popularizing medical knowledge during the Dutch Golden Age. Based in Dordrecht, he was one of the first doctors to write medical treatises in the Dutch vernacular rather than Latin, making health advice accessible to the general public. His most famous work, Schat der Gesontheyt (Treasure of Health), combined practical medical guidance with moral philosophy and citations from classical literature. 1408574. Special Collections.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12mo, half leather binding (19th century), 285 pp.; good copy, small chip to the binding. Rare first Elzevir edition of this epistolary essay by Johan van Beverwijk in which he argues against Claude Saumaise's interpretation of Hippocrates aphorism about urinary stones, the subject of van Beverwijck's thesis when graduating in Padua. The polemic between van Beverwijck and the French philologist Saumaise started in 1640 with Saumaise's publication of 'Interpretatio Hippocratei Aphorismi lxxix, section e iv, de calculo' in response to van Beverwijck's own 'De Calculo renum et vesicae liber singularis' of 1638. Beside the letters of the two protoganists of the discussion, this volume also contains a correspondence on the subject between van Beverwijck and Gerardus Vossius, a Dutch classical scholar and theologian. The second part of the book is a collection of letters, grouped under the subtitle Spicilegium de calculo, in which van Beverwijck discusses with prominent contemporaries the subject of urinary calculi. The correspondents include among others Guy Patin, Nicolaas Tulp, William Harvey, Vopiscus Fortunatus Plempius and Lazare Meyssonnier. A beautiful example of the philological physicians at their best, for whom Hippocrates had the greatest authority and polemical correspondance was business as usual. With woodcut Elzevir device to title.

Numerous copper engravings, both full-page and in-text, depicting animals, plants, and allegorical medical scenes (illustrator). An appealing 17th-century Dutch vernacular medical manual, pairing Johan van Beverwijckâs Schat der Gesontheyt (Treasure of Health) with its counterpart Schat der Ongesontheyt (Treasure of Unhealth), both printed at Dordrecht in 1642. Beverwijck, city physician of Dordrecht and one of the most prominent medical writers of the Dutch Golden Age, here sought to bridge learned Galenic medicine with accessible advice for the educated public. His works are notable for their vivid illustrations, moral and poetic interludes, and their collaboration with the poet Jacob Cats, who contributed verse linking bodily health with spiritual and social virtue. The engravings depict natural scenes, allegories, and detailed representations of flora and fauna, underscoring the harmony between medicine, nature, and divine order. These works were practical household guides, but also literary and artistic productions that reflect the eraâs blend of science, morality, and aesthetics. The publishers â" Jasper Gorissz. and Hendrick van Esch â" were active Dordrecht printers, supplying both scholarly and popular works. Their collaboration here situates the book firmly in the vibrant intellectual life of the Dutch Republic at the height of its prosperity. Provenance: with early ownership inscriptions to the title-page. Early owner signatures present on title-page; contemporary vellum binding with hand-lettered spine title. Very Good. Vellum binding darkened with age, lightly soiled; small hole to rear cover; textblock toned but clean and firm; engravings sharp and well-preserved. Contemporary full limp vellum, manuscript title faint on spine, vellum darkened and mottled with natural patina, yapp edges. Structurally solid with age-appropriate wear Early edition (both parts, Dordrecht 1642).
SECOND EXPANDED EDITION. 2 blank leaves + TP + [i]-[vii] = Dedication + [viii]-[xiii] = 7 poems in praise of the book + [xiv] = Index of Respondents + 1-182 + half title = Pars Altera, Ante hace nunquam edita (Another Part, those not previously published) + 185-488 + [489]-[495] = Index Rerum + [496] =Errata. Small Quarto. Second Expanded Edition.Johan van Beverwijck was the official city physician in Dordrecht who held several local administrative positions, lectured surgeons on anatomy and was the first Dutch doctor to defend the William Harvey's new ideas on the circulation of the blood. Along with several publications in the medical field, he famously published a book in 1639, On the Excellence of the Female Sex, proving that women were superior to men in every way. One of the burning medical, philosophical and theological issues of the day (all three were inextricably entwined in the 1600s) was in regard to the efficacy of medical treatments. The first question Beverwijck posed to several famous scholars was: "Should humans attempt to prolong their life if the duration of life has already been predetermined by God?" His second question was: "What is the purpose of doctors if the time of death has been predetermined?" In 1634, the first edition of this book appeared in which he printed the responses received from eight respondents (van Mylius, Colvius, Barlaeus, Beverovicius, Crucius, Westerbergius, Mersennus and Episcopius). Two years later, this expanded second edition reprinted those eight responses and added nine more (Rivetus, Reeck, Somern, van Laan, Voetius, Beverovicius, Junius, Polyander and Puteanus).Beverwijck continued to collect responses and publish a third, even more enlarged, edition in 1639. This one famously added the answers supplied by the great Dutch female scholar, Anna Marie van Schurman and had a total of twenty-four contributions. A fourth edition came out in 1651, but this was merely a reprint of this 1636 second edition. Contemporary full calf with covers triple ruled and M.D. 1916") to the top of the first blank leaf; a two-line ink notation to the top of the second blank leaf mentioning the second part beginning on page 183; ten lines of inked text on the verso of the second blank leaf attributed to L'abbe Rive (one of the book's contributors); a small inked ownership line just above the printer's device on the title page ("Ex Libris J. La Couet 1690"). Overall, a lovely copy of this interesting work by the noted physician and medical scholar Johan van Beverwijck. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

The three main parts contain a general survey of the several elements of medicine, varying from medical folklore and herbal knowledge to anatomy and chirurgy. At the end of the third part "Heel-konste" letters from and to Van Beverwijck as well as some other important letters are issued. Among these are letters of Descartes on the motion of the hart, written ca. 1637-1643, to and from Anna Maria van Schurman (ca. 1640), and William Harvey. Van Beverwijck was a very well-read man and all his writings include many references to ancient and contemporary authors on the subject.
