Its title quotes John Ruskin, wishing in 1849 'to render architecture historical'. The study is centered on the project and building of the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, designed in its main aspects around 1890 by the architect I G Clason. Criticism of contemporary design methodology, technology and style resulted in a new conception of form, combining basically unchanging types with dynamic elements of time and place. The large hall surrounded by galleries, forming the museum as built, is discussed in relation to models such as the house and the temple, the cathedral and the secular basilica. Composition as the fundamental means of architectural design is replaced by an attempt to re-establish the traditional process of historical transformation.
