First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The first edition of the autobiography of Jack Johnson, the first Black world heavyweight champion, with introductory contributions by Damon Runyon and others. Johnson recounts his rise through the color line, his championship reign during the Jim Crow era, and his years of exile abroad, a candid first-person account from one of the most consequential and controversial figures in American sport. Red cloth with the photographic frontispiece present; the gilt rubbed and dulled, spine darkened, corners lightly bumped, pages toned, with a contemporary owner signature to the front free endpaper, no dust jacket. Laid in is a period newspaper clipping reporting Johnson's death, "Jack Johnson, Famous Fighter, Dies of Injuries," dated June 11, 1946, now yellowed and fragile, a fitting association: a contemporary notice of the man's death tucked into the first edition of the life he wrote nineteen years earlier. A scarce piece of boxing and African American history.
