Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1637, John Hampden, a principled Buckinghamshire landowner, was tried for refusing to pay Ship Money, a levy resurrected by Charles I to fund naval defence without Parliament's sanction. Traditionally confined to coastal towns and wartime, its inland imposition during peace provo…ked unease. Hampden's case became a legal flashpoint for royal prerogative versus parliamentary authority. Although the judges narrowly upheld the King's right, the proceedings stirred unrest among the political class and literate society, who saw the ruling as an affront to property rights and constitutional tradition. Hampden emerged as a symbol of lawful resistance, and the trial amplified ideological tensions that would eventually erupt into civil war. 245 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Summers, Montague [Introduction and Notes by Augustus Montague Summers (10 April 1880 - 10 August 1948) was an English author and clergyman. He is known primarily for his scholarly work on the English drama of the 17th century, as well as for his idiosyncratic studies on witches, vampires, and werewolves, in all of which he professed to believe. He was responsible for the first English translation, published in 1928, of the notorious 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the Malleus Maleficarum].
