Hardback. Condition: New. EVOLUTION OF ISLAND MAMMALS Evolution on islands differs in a number of important ways from evolution on mainland areas. Over millions of years of isolation, exceptional and sometimes bizarre mammals evolved on islands, such as pig-sized elephants and hippos, giant rats and gorilla-sized lemurs that would have been formidable to their mainland ancestors.Evolution of Island Mammals, Second Edition, provides an updated and expanded overview of the current knowledge on fossil island mammals worldwide, ranging from the Oligocene to the onset of the Holocene. The book addresses evolutionary processes and key aspects of insular mammal biology, exemplified by a variety of fossil species.Readers familiar with the first edition will find here a host of updated and enhanced material, including:An entirely new chapter on the island ruleUpdated and expanded theoretical chaptersUpdated and improved taxonomic informationExtensive coverage of new discoveriesBody masses or body size indices for most extinct island mammalsNew figures visualizing the richness of the fossil recordThis accessible and richly illustrated textbook is written for graduate level students and professional researchers in evolutionary biology, palaeontology, biogeography, zoology, and ecology.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Eugène Dubois, the man who found the 'missing link' between apes and humans, intended to write a book about his finds in Indonesia. He never finished it. In this current volume the outlines of Dubois' book are reconstructed. Recently discovered correspondence with his intended publisher shed new light on the troublesome character of Dubois and his inability to communicate with the scientific establishment. This volume also discloses the vast amount of photographic material that is part of the Dubois Collection at Naturalis, the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, the Netherlands. As Pat Shipman summarizes it in her preface: '[.] what this book offers, it is more: more images, more letters, more details, more insight into the workings of a brilliant but unquestionably difficult man of science. We shall not see Dubois' like again so it is doubly fortunate that Albers and de Vos have uncovered so much about his life.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. 2nd ed., 2nd printing ; xii, 435 p. illus., map (on lining paper) plates (part col.) 26 cm. ; OCLC 1401770978 ; "An American Horticultural Society book."; orange cloth in photographic dustjacket ; owner presentation on half title ; "Under a "grand-fathering" clause, the names of J. B. Stevenson's Kurume introductions that were considered to have been available "in the trade" were registered in 1958 by the then International Registration Authority/Royal Horticultural Society (IRA/RHS) and were included in The International Rhododendron Register published in that year by the RHS. Whilst doubts have been expressed about the correctness of the spellings and transliteration of some plant names, what really matters is that the IRA/ RHS had the foresight to "put a stick in the sand" and record the names and details of what plants were thought to have been commercially available at a particular point in time. J. B. Stevenson and James Russell both supplied information at the time the 1958 edition was compiled, and the content of the IRA/ RHS records suggest they were based on this information, which, presumably, the RHS archived for future reference. Minor revisions were made to the names in the registration process where they did not accord with the expected format and spelling of Japanese epithets.(1) Frederic P. Lee in The Azalea Book, Second Edition, makes passing mention of Stevenson, but only names 28 of his introductions.(2) Irrespective of problems with the transliteration of Japanese names, Lee's flower details correctly replicate the details for Stevenson's introductions in Britain."--John M. Hammond ; wear to dustjacket ; VG/G. Book.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. One of a series of 8 they made in collaboration in 1585. Condition: Slight loss top left corner, trimmed close but retaining legend beneath.in Latin and the various regions the Pope ruled or did rule, with him being venerated and crowned bottom left and the Zodiac sign for Leo. Depicts cities under the benevolent warmth of the Sun and under its favouritism; Rome, Syracuse, Ravenna, etc. Laid lined paper with ornate ball shaped watermark actual figure of the watermark not clear enough? Reverse has old light vertical fold line down centre, but not affecting the image. Very Good Genuine 16th century copper engraving. Clean in appearance, watermarked hand-made laid paper (chain paper for US buyers) the watermark looks like a papal "orb" and possibly the date '51? A little loss at top left edge and an almost invisible archival in inch Japanese tissue repair at middle top on the reverse and again paper thin in one spot at the same edge, image very clear, good strong strike indicating an early pull of this print. 27.5 x 28.5 cm *NOTE: A curious anomaly not picked up on by other examples in museum archives is a circular mark between the charioteers "Sol's" legs, a circle with a central dot, perfect in every way and shows on all the few images similar that we located in institutional libraries and/or collections but not described or seemingly noticed by other archivists? A curious meaningful addition not an error on this copy? BRITISH LIBRARY copy describes it thus: Sol riding on a chariot drawn by four horses in the clouds in top part, various ceremonies take place below including the crowning of a king the anointing of a pope, triumphal procession through arch etc; zodiac sign of Leo in oval in top centre; after Maarten de Vos. 1585.
