Add to basket8vo, pp. 43, [1] advertisements; bound with another work, unrecorded but incomplete; in modern cloth. Bookplate of Paul Morgan. One of a number of editions of this famous and gruesome trial. John Donellan had married the sister of the young Sir Theodosius Boughton, whose fortune would come to Mrs Donellan if he died as a minor. When Sir Theodosius died after drinking a draught of medicine, cyanide poisoning was suspected and Donellan tried and found guilty. He was hanged still protesting his innocence. Bound with this account of the trial is a short biography of the murderer by one Capt. Murphy (The life of John Donellan: London, J. Wenman, [1781]): it is apparently completely unrecorded, but is unfortunately incomplete, ending in mid-sentence on p. 38.

This is an early example of a trial transcript being prepared by stenographers rather than the court barristers. Sir Theodosius Boughton, 1760-1780, was due to inherit a large fortune if he survived to the age of 21; if not, all would go to his sister. Donellan was his brother-in-law. After Boughton had died, suspicions led to exhumation of his body and traces of poison were discovered. Circumstantial evidence led to Donellan's conviction and execution.
