The stories take the reader from colonial French and Spanish rule through the Civil War and Reconstruction and into the Jim Crow era of the twentieth century. Author John Durel culminates his research with a final chapter that juxtaposes his personal experience growing up middle class in the segregated South and a Black, working-class relative who labored at two jobs to provide for his family. Through it all, Descendants tracks the changing definition of what it meant to be Creole in New Orleans and the complex cultural, economic, and social connotations of one's parentage. Throughout this era, the Church of England regularly published the Book of Common Prayer in English. This 1696 Latin edition includes the Psalms of David also in Latin all translated into Latin by John Durel. Durel was an English cleric who spent many years working in France at the Savoy Chapel who had originally translated the Book of Common Prayer into French. While the French translation was immediately popular, a Latin edition was ordered. Curiously, Durel was not the first choice for the translation, but after John Earle of Salisbury died (the original choice for the translation), the project was passed on Durel who completed the first Latin Book of Common Prayer in 1670.
