SB. 232 pp IllustratedPublished Price £14.50 The author of this rare account of one of New Zealandâs Maori wars is something of a man of mystery. John Featon certainly served in the New Zealand Artillery Volunteers in the 1860s, when the 1863/4 Waikato War was fought, and may also have been a journalist on the Daily Southern Cross newspaper in the 1870s. And that is almost all that is known of him - apart from the facts he assembled in this book, which he published in 1911. The narrative proudly concentrates on the deeds of the New Zealand Colonial Militia and Volunteers, rather than on the British regular Imperial Forces which bore the brunt of the fighting. Featonâs original manuscript has been revised by Captain Gilbert Mair, who has added an account of the subsequent Te Kooti expeditions to Featonâs original text. This is a book for all Kiwis and anyone interested in the Maori wars.

Pp. 100, mostly printed double column, folding frontispiece portrait ('Ta Whiao'), plus one plate, folding map at end; small demy 8vo; dull green textured cloth, upper board lettered in gilt, edges of boards slightly rubbed, the lower board a trifle soiled, spine faintly faded; long pencilled annotation on verso of upper free endpaper, plus a two-line annotation to the lower free endpaper and some scattered pencil marks to the margins, lower hinge tender, tiny nick to fore-edge of frontispiece, a couple of short splits or closed tears to edges of folding map, outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; printed and published for the Proprietor by J. D. Wickham, Auckland, n.d.[1879]. Ingleton 5332. *A variant imprint to the one recorded by Hocken, p. 318 (which was printed by John Henry Field and lacks the folding frontispiece portrait present here). This is the Ingleton copy, with the bookplate of G. & N. Ingleton on upper pastedown, and the (faint) green stamped Ingleton Catalogue number on lower pastedown. Later from the library of David Levine, Sydney, with his bookplate also on upper pastedown. The inked signature of an early owner (A. Wilson) is on the upper free endpaper.
