Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Little is known about the life of Captain John Frederick Dennett, who published this compilation of travel narratives in 1826, with a second edition in 1835. A naval officer, he was clearly familiar with recent developments in polar exploration, but his writing also had an educational and moral purpose. 'It must be attended with advantage to become acquainted with the state of mankind in other parts of the world', but also it will be encouraging to the poor in Britain 'to find that the lowest state of comfort in this country is preferable to all the enjoyments within the reach of natives of other climes'. Emphasising encounters with native peoples rather than geographical or scientific discoveries, Dennett describes expeditions by Parry, Franklin and Sir John Ross in the Arctic seas and the Canadian north, and also includes a chapter on Giovanni Battista Belzoni's travels in Egypt and Nubia.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the daring and enduring efforts of several maritime expeditions in search of a Northwest Passage to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Beginning with the early 1600s, the author chronicles the trials and tribulations of seafarers who risked their lives amidst icebergs and relentless conditions. The book delves into the scientific discoveries and observations made during these voyages, capturing the grandeur of exploration and highlighting the human spirit's unyielding determination to conquer nature's boundaries. Each expedition's findings contributed to a deeper understanding of the Arctic regions and paved the way for advancements in navigation and polar research. By weaving together historical accounts, scientific insights, and tales of human resilience, this book paints a vivid portrait of the Arctic's allure and the indomitable spirit of those who ventured into its icy embrace. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
