Illustrated with a frontispiece of Hampton Court Palace,… four full page maps of the river and over one hundred vignette woodcut illustrations. Collated complete. John Fisher Murray was an Irish poet and humourist, perhaps best known for his satirical works. He did however write a number of works regarding London, notably 'The World of London'. This volume describes the area surrounding the river Thames, and includes descriptions of Kensington, Richmond and Hampton Court, to name a few. In the original red cloth binding with gilt motif to front board. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the boards and extremities. Slight splitting to the head and tail of the spine. The odd light mark to the boards. Bookplate and private library label to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. The Brook and Its Banks, a posthumously publsihed work on the life of our brooks and banks, written by the parson-naturalist John George Wood, revised by his…son Theodore. Dated 1907 by the previous owner's inscription, first published in The Girl's Own Paper in 1887. In full red calf from Hildersham House, St. Peters. Contains a frontispiece, numerous in-text illustrations, and thirteen plates counted within the pagination. As a parson-naturalist, Wood belived it was part of his religious duty to observe nature and appreciate its beauty, with this particular book taking us through the banks of the English brook. Wood was a popular writer of natural history, and helped boost the subject's appeal during his lifetime. In full red calf. Externally, the odd mark to boards and slight rubbing to joints and edges. Minor rubbing marks to spine, and marginal bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Red marble end papers are bright and clean. Internally, firmly bound. Shelfwear most evident in corners where cloth worn through. One plate and its tissue are detached, and this plate is chipped and has tear in right margin not affecting picture itself.
