Contemporary maroon half calf with green cloth over boards, gilt tooling to boards and spine, raised bands and gilt label to spine. Marbled endpapers, all edges speckled blue. Spotting to preliminaries and endpapers, some light and infrequent markings throughout, leather worn especially to lower board, sunning to spine, edges and spine extremities bumped, wearing to cloth. Very good. This is an interesting 'scrap book' of writings ranging from 'descriptive pieces in prose' which detail things like the boa constrictor and days out in cities to 'Humorous Pieces' and poetry.

In 1817 he joined Charles Maclaren and William Ritchie in preparing the first number of the 'Scotsman' newspaper, and in the same month he removed to Dumfries to become editor of the 'Dumfries and Galloway Courier.' He made himself familiar with the district in which his paper circulated, and became an authority on agriculture, besides writing for his columns descriptive sketches of his journeys. This book contains reprints of 35 sketches he wrote for the Courier, and is divided into two parts. The first part contains descriptions of various animals and places; and the second part covers people, places, and miscellaneous sketches. Subjects include - Curling; Captain Hugh Clapperton; St Michael's Church-yard, the disinterment of Burns The book is bound in contemporary half leather over green cloth covered boards and gold titling on a leather label and five thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and scuffing with a little damage to the leather on the corner tips. The spine is also scuffed and a home repair has been carried out to the spine with it now being tight-bound to the text block. The original top panel of the spine is missing and has been replaced with newer leather. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and foxing to the second front and rear free endpapers, the title-page, preface page, and last page of the book. The first contents page is soiled with some staining from water splashing and a small piece is missing from the bottom edge. There is no inscription.
