Very Good A peculiar but warmly signed and inscribed copy of a scarce academic work by John Paul Getty, who at one point was the wealthiest man in the world.  The book is a broad look at aspects of the 18th century, split into Geography and History, Science, Literature, Music, Art, 'A Contemporary Letter' (republication of an 1802 letter written in London by an American Tourist), and finally Daily Life. The work is widely illustrated with a folding map showing borders in 1792 and then in 1937 and the beginning and copious examples of art and objects from the period across Europe but predominantly France and Britain.   Getty had a fascination with art and Europe and collected widely, both furniture and works of art for his New York Penthouse, but his chronic miserliness meant he was reluctant to spend much on any individual work but flourished during the late 30's with an art market that was struggling, Europe in the Eighteenth Century, is testament to his interest in art and Europe, and in the introduction outlines that he wants to 'acquaint the reader with the life and accomplishments of that splendid period in the world's history'.
