Add to basketFirst edition. Folio (29 x 18.5cm). 'A substantial work. Despite it's haphazard arrangement, Philipot was clearly aiming at the sort of county history that Hasted eventually published. By the standards of the time it was a scholarly antiquarian study which was ambitious enough to attempt an appendix on the supposed etymology of Kentish place names.'- Currie & Lewis. pp. [xii],401. Without the 4pp. 'second table of addenda or omissions', which is frequently lacking, the prelims varying from copy to copy, presumably as a point of issue. With a large folding map (77 x 63cm) by Philip Symonson, neatly laid down on linen, the vignettes of Rye & Dover engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar, and four plates on the letterpress. Three prelim leaves & first two text leaves with very slight loss to outer-margins, nowhere near the text, map with a few small holes, but fairly unobtrusive and pretty much restricted to blank areas, occasional marks to the text, but a sound copy in contemporary calf, rebacked, gilt, new endpapers. With the signature to the title and engraved armorial bookplate of John Austen Esq, of Broadford, Kent, who was Jane Austen's great-grandfather. Vg. [Smith 4,17; Upcott 352; Lowndes 1850; Hazlitt II, 471; Pennington 665; Currie & Lewis 208; Rodger 210].
