Stapled Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, As Issued. First Printing. Dated in pencil front cover July 24. SIGNED in pencil front cover by Yankess 1st baseman John Sturm, and SIGNED in pencil rear cover by Cleveland Indians center fielder Roy "Stormy" Weatherly. Original printed stapled wrappers wi…th 10 pp. ads and 2 pp. score card. Score card marked in pencil through 2nd inning. Very Good, upper corner rear cover soiled. John Sturm's big league baseball career lasted only one season, with the World Series-winning New York Yankees. He entered the Yankees starting lineup May 15, the same day Joe DiMaggio began his 56 game hitting streak, and his steady play at 1st and as lead-off batter helped to steady a struggling Yankees team. Later that year he became the first married player to enter military service for WWII. Due to an injury suffered during his service and later injuries playing ball, he never made back into another big league game. Roy Weatherly played 10 seasons in the bigs, with Cleveland, the Yankees, and the New York Giants. Traded to the Yankees after the 1942 season, he appeared in one at bat in the 1943 World Series. He missed two seasons, 1944-45, while serving in WWII. "I don't have to tell you that every ballplayer's prayers are directed toward New York and a job with the Yankees." - Roy Weatherly (1943) in Baseball's Greatest Quotes (1982). Signed by Author(s).

The recipient of these eight letters Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October…2018. The eight items are in good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. The third item signed 'Hugh', the other seven signed 'Hugh Leonard'. A total of 9pp, 8vo (five in autograph and four typed). ONE: TLS, 25 January 1973. He tried reviewing for 'Films and Filming' when he lived in London, 'but there was nothing doing', but he names two books he would like to review. 'Anyway, any film books are always welcome. / And if you like to try me out with a few playtexts, then I and my shelves would be willing to bear the weight!' He reports: 'I am due to go to Berlin in March first to see a play of mine. If there is a chance of availing of your free ticket service, I would be grateful'; but if not, then please don't trouble to write to that effect: I have already booked provi[si]onally with Aer Lingus.' TWO: ALS, 29 January 1973. He thanks him for 'arranging the Berlin Ticket', and states that 'it would tempt us into taking a holiday' if there was 'a further possibility of a brace of tickets some time'. THREE: TLS, 9 April 1973. He is returning a package of 'art books intended for someone called Douglas'. 'Please don't worry that I seem to have hit a lull in my reviewing. I'm finishing off a stage play for this year's Dublin Festival, and should be sending you something in another week.' He thanks him for promising to send for review one of the books he requested in Item One: 'no charge: I'll be delighted to own such a set. Would be interested, by the way, in reviewing "Memo from Selznick", if possible.' FOUR: ALS, 19 January 1974. After discussing 'the figures you have returned to the tax people' he writes: 'Gerald Colgan, who is a friend of mine, does reviews for "P. and P." Being rather timid, he has prevailed on me to ask Mr Ansorge, through you, about payment for past contributions - says he has received nothing so far.' FIVE: ALS, 28 February 1974. He is returning the brochure Dosse has sent, which he has marked the books he would be interested in reviewing. SIX: TLS, 22 April 1974. He is off to Hamburg to see one of his plays. 'If there is a chance of an air ticket ex. London I would be most grateful. If not, then please don't even trouble to reply . . . I just thought I'd ask before booking off my own bat.' He hopes to send 'another batch of reviews' within the next month. SEVEN: TLS, 3 July 1974. He is about to start his review of the films books he has been sent, and asks for payment for 'the long omnibus review' sent 'as long as five months ago'. EIGHT: ALS, undated. He will be glad to review 'the Olivier biography'. 'What you suggest about printing reviews in "F. & F." is fine with me.'.
