Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. An original vintage book published in 1881 in London. This is the Third Edition, enlarged and illustrated, and, as the author indicates in his Preface - includes additions and amplifications, as well as corrections to some defects in the first two editions. Illustrated with several engravings of scenery around Monaco as well as the Casino itself and illustrations of a roulette wheel and other gambling paraphernalia. Includes an appeal to a group that was trying to suppress gambling in Monte Carlo. Some foxing on the last page, plus some weakness in the last few pages of the book, which show a slight separation from the binding. There is some scuffing to the edges of the covers, as well as dirt marks on the covers; the front cover gold lettering is somewhat faded with age; gold foredges are a bit soiled but still quite good. The contents is remarkably clean and intact for its age. Measures 5.5" x 8.5" with 84 pages.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Riviera, the author delves into the casino's history, revealing its origins as a means for the tiny principality of Monaco to survive after losing significant territory. The author exposes the allure and devastating consequences of gambling, weaving together stories of fortunes won and lost, lives ruined, and suicides committed within the casino's opulent halls. This book offers a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and the moral decay that can accompany the pursuit of quick riches. It also sheds light on the intricate relationship between poverty, desperation, and the predatory practices of gambling establishments. Ultimately, the book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible gaming and the need for societal safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals from the harms associated with gambling. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The author, a resident of Nice during the time when the casino was established, draws from firsthand experience and extensive research to provide a comprehensive analysis of the human drama that unfolds within its gilded halls. Through vivid descriptions and gripping anecdotes, the book exposes the destructive nature of gambling addiction, the despair it brings upon individuals and families, and the moral decay that permeates society as a whole. By exploring the psychology of both the players and the casino itself, the author reveals how greed, desperation, and the illusion of easy fortune lead to ruin.
