The publisher, Thomas Tegg (1776-1845), began his publishing career as an apprentice to Alexander Meggett, a book-seller in Dalkeith. After an itinerant life selling chapbooks in Berwick, working for the editor of the Sheffield Register and travelling in Ireland and Wales, he moved to London in 1796. He found success in publishing pamphlets containing abridgements of popular works; he sold fifty thousand copies of a work on the life of Nelson after the Battle of Trafalgar. 'A London Encyclopedia' was published twice in 22 volumes in 1829 and 1839.

Maps. Condition: Good. 62 x 88 cm. Good condition with some toning and wear to the folds. An early example of steel-engraved cartography. The map meticulously illustrates and labels London buildings and streets, extending south from Regents Park to the Surrey Zoological Gardens and east from Hyde Park to the commercial docks. A decorative geometric border sets the map off from a surround of vignettes depicting 33 of the city's architectural landmarks--including the Bank of England, Lambeth Palace, Covent Garden and Waterloo Bridge. At the top of the map, the title flanks an elaborate cartouche that combines seals, coats of arms, flags, and other symbols of the British Empire. The elaborate seal reveals the scope and power of the city at this point in history, which would only increase in the following decade with the completion of the Thames Tunnel, the worlds first underwater tunnel, shown here under construction. John Shury was a British engraver and printer who worked with the publishing firm known as the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, or SDUK. This firm was formed in 1826 and published low cost maps with the goal of reaching a large market while still maintaining high quality and precision.
