Webber. Etch'd by B.T. Pouncy'; A Human Sacrifice. 285 x 490mm (plate size), trimmed to plate at lower edge, titled in ink beneath image, 'J. Webber del. W. Woollett aqua fortis fecit'; Tereoboo, King of Owyhee. 258 x 398mm (plate size), titled in ink beneath image, 'Drawn from Nature by J. Webber. Engraved by B.T. Pouncy'; Inhabitants of Norton Sound. 254 x 398mm (plate size), titled in ink beneath the image. Four proof plates before letters being early states of images from Cook's last voyage, showing scenes in Hawai'i, Tahiti, New Zealand and Alaska. The attributions given on the prints give an indication to the many collaborators who worked with Webber to bring copies of the numerous drawings which he made on the Third Voyage to the general public. Benjamin Thomas Pouncy was an etcher and line engraver best regarded for his landscapes and topographical views. He trained under his father but his finest work was under the direction of his brother-in-law William Woollett, who worked with Webber on aquatints (see A Human Sacrifice.). …

Condition: Near fine. 24 x 35 cm handcoloured print. Cropped, but not affecting the image. This engraving is after a drawing by John Webber from John Hawkesworth's account (1773) of the voyages of Captain James Cook, Joseph Banks and Captain John Byron. John Webber was the artist on Cook's third voyage from 1776-1780. Cook traveled to Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island, between March 29 and April 26, 1778. Illustration shows the local method of cooking, the rows of smoked salmon under the ceiling, the opening of the roof for the entry of light, the inhabitants seated on mats, their occupation at weaving, etc.…

Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. The extended title- "To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain & c. This Plate representing The Death of Captain Cook is humbly inscribed. By their Lordship's most obedient and devoted Servant, John Webber". A very crisp impression on laid, watermarked paper. With the impression mark. A very nice bright clean copy of an important separately published engraving.
