Original colour-printed wrappers, that of no. 26 designed by Marcel Duchamp, no. 27 by Wassily Kandinsky. No. 26 water-stained to margin of last few leaves, no. 27 rather stained and cockled to first and last few leaves, bot…h volumes a little toned and dusted. Wrappers rubbed, chipped and stained, some loss to spine coverings, front wrapper of no. 27 water-damaged, soiled and lacking section to head, binding split at p. 48. The final two issues of Eugene Jolas?s influential literary periodical Transition, which printed several extracts from the work in progress that became Finnegans Wake through its ten-year run. Issue 26 is the first appearance in print of an 18-page section that became with some revisions the opening section of part 3, the episode of the Norwegian Captain and the Tailor, while issue 27 contains the first appearance of what became the third section of part 3, the radio play dialogue between Taff and Butt. In addition to the Joyce material, the issues also contain an extract from Anaïs Nin?s prose Poem The House of Incest, and parts two and three of editor Eugene Jolas?s three-part translation of Kafka?s The Metamorphosis. Bound without the original wrappers and without the half-title to No. 3, pages tanned as usual. Joints rubbed, outer corner of No. 3 title-page missing with loss to the year, professionally repaired. A beautifully bound, handsome copy of two early issues of this important literary review produced in Paris in the twenties. Sylvia Beach in her book "Shakespeare and Company, talks of 'transition': "All the best Anglo-Saxon and European work of the period appeared in it, much of it for the first time. Of all the reviews I came in contact with, 'transition' was the most vital, the longest-lived, and the review that I felt was most intelligently devoted to the interests of new writing."
