Intérieur manié, poussiéreux sur les bords, état correct. Manque un double feuillet qui devait porter la page de titre et une éventuelle dernière page. A PROPOS : Rare exemplaire de planches scientifiques en premier état signées de Jacques Jollain (1654-1710). Elles seront reprises, signature masquée par un cadre, partiellement regravées par Jérome Vallet (1667-1722) dans le « Palais de la sagesse. Recueil de philosophes et de savants suivi de planches de diverses sciences » (1713). Jérome Vallet à probablement récupéré les matrices par l'intermédiaire du graveur Gaspard Duchange (1662-1757), qui avait fait l'inventaire du fonds d'atelier de Jollain à son décès en 1710. Missing a double sheet that should have been the title page and possibly a last page. Rare copy of those scientific plates in first state signed by Jacques Jollain (1654-1710). They will be published again, signature masked by a frame, partially engraved again, and signed by Jérome Vallet (1667-1722) in the « Palais de la sagesse. Recueil de philosophes et de savants suivi de planches de diverses sciences » (1713). Jérome Vallet probably recovered the dies through the engraver Gaspard Duchange (1662-1757), who had made an inventory of Jollain's workshop fund at his death in 1710. Dans ces deux miniatures, les seigneurs et les dames de la cour sont distingués par leurs armoiries, que les uns et les autres portent sur leurs cottes d'armes et sur leurs robes. La description qui en été faite par le P. Menestrier donne le nom et la qualité de tous ces personnages, d'après leurs blasons. Ces miniatures, gravées sur les originaux par Jollain, sont curieuses à cause des costumes du quinzième sièle qu'elles nous ont conservés. . La seconde partie, la première énoncée dans le titre, est l'oeuvre de Jean Le Laboureur, qui mourut pendant qu'elle étoit sous presse. Il n'ya a qu'un faux-titre et pas de frontispice. Le dernier f. est chiffré 119, mais il y a erreur dans la pagination ; cette partie n'a réellement que 100 ff. Le cahier S suit immédiatement le cahier I. Malgré cette interruption dans les signatures, et les erreurs dans la pagination que j'ai indiquées, le volume est complet". Allut précise que "tous les bibliographes, depuis le P. Nicéron, donnent au P. Menestrier La cour du roy Charles V surnommé le Sage, et celle de la reyne Jeanne de Bourbon, son épouse ; Paris, Jollain, 1683, in-folio ou in-12. Ils ont répété, sans examen peut-être, ce qu'a dit le Journal des Scavans en rendant compte de la découverte faite par le P. Menestrier. Je n'ai jamais vu l'édition in-folio, à moins qu'on n'ait voulu désigner les "Tableaux généalogiques" ; j'en dis autant de l'in-12, et je ne puis admettre l'existence de ces deux édition : je suis porté à croire qu'elles ne sont autre chose que les figures gravées in-fol. par Jollain, placées par le P. Menestrier, avec l'explication qu'il en a donnée, parmi les additions, qu'il a faites au livre de Le Laboureur, et qu'elles n'ont jamais été publiées à part". Engraved allegorical title-page (lightly soiled, edges frayed), and 38 engraved maps, each decorated with a fine cartouche and dated 1667, all with hand-colour (pale waterstain throughout heaviest towards the end and affecting the images). Contemporary vinegar marbled paper wrappers (a bit faded and worn). Provenance: contemporary numbering to each map. First published in 1643, and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Essentially a re-working of the "Atlas Minor" of Mercator and Hondius, 1628 (first published 1607). Including double-hemisphere celestial and world maps "Typus Orbis Terrarum."; and two other maps that show the American coastline: "Pole Arctique", and "Nouvelle Description de Lamerique" [sic]. With the map of "Les Isles des Indes Orientalle" showing the north-western coastline of New Guinea, but with nothing of Australia. Jollain and his son Francois were noted engravers and publishers, specialising in religious prints and portaits. Francois Gerard Jollain (1660-c.1735) was an engraver and printseller in Paris. He was part of a family of engravers, map and printsellers. He was the son of Gerard Jollain (d.1683). Beneath the title of this rare work is written 'par Gaspard Powell ingenieur dans larmee du Roy dangleterre et mis au jour en 1689'. This type of print whereby rows of topographical images are displayed is extremely rare but not unknown at the time. Peter Stent's Catalogue of 1653 refers to 'All the Cities of England in small'. It is only known by one example of a second state by John Overton which is bound into another work at the Ashmolean Library, Oxford. These complemented the fashion at the time for 'carte et figures', or maps with decorative illustrated borders.The title here alludes to the artist, one Gaspard Powell, and engineer in the Royal army in 1689. The claim is that he drew all the images on location himself. Two rows each are devoted to images of England, Scotland and Ireland. Tooley's Dictionary records the existence of a 'Carte des Isles Britanniques' by the same Jollain issued in the same year. There is only one recorded example of the map. Its dimensions are not dissimilar and it does not bear any surrounding views. It could be seen that the two plates were complimentary. The general map states that it was the work of 'L. de Pontigny', geographer to the King. It is interestingly dedicated to the Prince of Wales who would later become known as the Old Pretender in the first Jacobite Rebellion of 1715. It was his birth on 10 June 1688 which largely triggered the Glorious Revolution which overthrew James II in favour of the Protestant William III. They were no doubt issued to mark the attempt invasion of James II of Ireland Ireland from France. Francois Jollain (1641-1704), who is likely in some way related, also published a general map of the British Isles in the same year 1689. This one does contain several town views, all unrelated, and is similarly extremely rare, surviving in just three known examples. Provenance: private English collection since c.1990. Globe p.229 & no. 361-2; Griffiths (1998) p. 191; Tooley's Dictionary (1999-2004).

Other. Condition: In very good condition. Rare atlas by Jollain with engraved title and 38 engraved maps. This small atlas of 38 maps is known by several publisher names. The first edition that is recorded, is that of Jean Boisseau in 1643. The maps of this atlas are faithful copies of the "Atlas Minor" of Mercator-Hondius of 1628, this atlas was copied by N. Picart (1657-59).The same edition exists with Jollain's address. Jollain finally reissued the atlas in 1667 with some modifications. The scales are most often removed (because too inaccurate) and replaced by the mention of "excudit" by Jollain and sometimes the date of 1667. The titles of Russia and Muscovy were interchanged. Rare atlas by Jollain with engraved title and 38 engraved maps. The map of France was missing and was replaced from another copy. Our example has has the following imprint with date on the engraved title page:,Le Vent A Paris, Chez G Jollain rue St. Jaque a Lenfant Iesus 1687'.
