They have all been cleaned of their layer of varnish - yellowed with age - and the dirt of many years. The varnish was in fact often applied by later owners, against the wishes of th…e painters. This led to the decision to remove not only the dirt but the varnish too. The pristine beauty of these paintings can at long last be once more admired. Again they are at the glorious centre of a show including the Barbizon School, Jongkind and Van Gogh, with their influence on French nineteenth-century art, together with Post-Impressionist works by Signac, Van Dongen, Vuillard and the young Picasso. The immeasurable wealth of our Museum's Print Room makes it possible to follow closely all these different artists. The idea of a simultaneous presentation of works on paper, canvases and sculptures is one that the Impressionists themselves strongly supported in their own exhibitions.
