NOOIT GEBOUWDE TOREN VAN DE NIEUWE KERK "Amstelaedamense cum turri novum (ut ajunt) templum, Ao. 1666." Ets met gravure vervaardigd door Clement de Jonghe in 1666, afm. 58,5 x 43,5 cm. Tot tweemaal toe is er een begin gemaakt met het bouwen van een toren bij de Amsterdamse Nieuwe Kerk. In 1565 waren de fundamenten gelegd, maar door het veranderende religieuze en politieke klimaat werd de verdere uitvoer van de plannen onmogelijk gemaakt. In 1646 werd een tweede poging gedaan. Jacob van Campen, ook de architect van het naastgelegen stadhuis (thans het Paleis op de Dam), ontwierp een toren in een gotiserende stijl. In 1647 wordt de laatste van de 6363 palen voor de toren de grond ingeslagen. Er volgt een oud magisch ritueel om de bouw goed te laten verlopen: een bouwoffer ter waarde van 200 gulden aan goud en een eerste steenlegging, maar in 1653 wordt de bouw al gestaakt. De kosten voor de bouw van het nieuwe stadhuis, dat op dat moment in volle gang is, vallen dermate hoog uit, dat het stadsbestuur besluit om van de bouw van de toren voor de Nieuwe Kerk af te zien. In 1783 werd de onvoltooide romp gesloopt. Wat nu rest is het zandstenen portaal. Hier zien we de westzijde van de kerk en hoe de toren er in al haar glorie uit had gezien. De prent is gemaakt nadat de bouw van de toren al was gestaakt. Wellicht was graveur Clement de Jonghe het niet eens met de voorkeur van het stadsbestuur om het stadhuis te financieren ten koste van wat het hoogste gebouw van Nederland had moeten worden. Dat een latere eigenaar van de prent het dan weer met Clement de Jonghe niet eens was, verklaart wellicht de reden waarom diens naam uit de voorstelling deels is weg gekrast. Prijs: Euro 350,-.

Sheet overall darkened, slightly stained, edge area with small defects in the unprinted area, paper adhesive tape on the back of the edge from a previous mounting in the frame. Overall still a good copy.

17TH CENTURY ROME "Roma", copper engraving made by Clement de Jonghe and published by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam around 1680. Coloured by a Size: approx. 40,5 x 50 cm. When the copper plates of art dealer Clement de Jonghe (ca. 1624-1677) were auctioned in 1679, this particular plate was bought by Frederick de Wit, who soon after published the view of Rome under his own name. 17th century Rome was a bustling city that had experienced significant urban development and artistic flourishing under the patronage of various popes. The city's architectural landscape was dominated by the Baroque style, characterized by its grandeur and elaborate ornamentation. At the heart of Rome stood St. Peter's Basilica, a magnificent symbol of Catholicism and the center of the Papal States. The basilica, on the far right of the engraving, had undergone significant renovations and expansions over the centuries, with the construction of the iconic dome designed by Michelangelo. Scientific discoveries and advancements were taking place during the Scientific Revolution, with figures like Galileo Galilei contributing to the fields of astronomy and physics. Despite its cultural and artistic splendor, Rome faced challenges. Political instability and power struggles occasionally disrupted the city's harmony. Additionally, periodic outbreaks of the plague affected the population, leading to social and economic difficulties. The poems in Latin, Dutch and French below the view also mention that in spite of its splendor Rome is undergoing changes: "Beautiful Rome, in short, the princess of the world, The ornament of Europe, and the school of the arts. The heroine of old, second to none, Made herself invincible in battle, and hazards; But time has eaten away at her heart; The vengeful Rome is vanquished by herself, And lies dead within her own walls, So the old goes to naught and the new takes a start." 17E-EEUWS UTRECHT VANUIT HET NOORD-OOSTEN "Ultrajectum", kopergravure naar het ontwerp van Herman Saftleven, uitgegeven rond 1660 door Clement de Jonghe te Amsterdam. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 40,7 x 49,9 cm. We zien de stad in het jaar 1649, met van links naar rechts de (in 1840 gesloopte) St.-Servaesabdij, het Maria Magdalenaklooster. het Heilige Kruis Gasthuis (gesloopt in 1811), de Nicolaikerk, het voormalige Hieronymusconvent, de Catharinakerk, de Wittevrouwenpoort (gesloopt rond 1856), de Pieterskerk, de (in 1707 afgebroken) kerk van de St-.Paulusabdij, de kerk van het Regulierenklooster (een weeshuis), het Wittevrouwenklooster (afgebroken na brand in 1710), de Dom, het Duitse Huis, de Janskerk, de Buurkerk (buiten gebruik gesteld in 1975), het stadhuis, de Plompetoren (een van de oude verdedigingstorens, afgebroken in 1832), stadskasteel Groenewoude, de Mariakerk, Oudaen (ook een nog bestaand stadskasteel aan de Oudegracht), de Weerdpoort (aan de noordzijde van de huidige binnenstad, waar tegenwoordig de Weerdbrug ligt) en tenslotte de Jacobikerk. Onder het stadsgezicht een lofdicht op de stad van de Amsterdamse dichter Jacob(us) Heiblocq (1623-1690). "Romeinen wijt vermaart, ziet hoe uw Bondgenoot Uw sterkten en zijn stadt heeft cierelijk vergroot. Als Rhyn en Oceaan haar golven t'zaamen trouwden Zat diergelijk een roem uw Grootvaders op het Hooft. Hier wijckt en Tooren en Kerck (na waarde nooit gelooft) Voor geen gebouw op aard, hoe heerlijk men 't oock bouwde. Grabado con interior oval. Inscripción en la parte inferior: "B. Spranger inventer, Clement de Ionghe excudit". Conservación: Buen estado. Márgenes cortos al borde de la huella del grabado. Observaciones: La firma del grabador Egbert Van Panderen ha sido eliminada y sobre ella se ha escrito "HG". Procedencia: Grabado perteneciente a la colección de arte de Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán. VII marqués del Carpio y de Eliche (1629 - 1687), noble, diplomático y político español. Era hijo del también coleccionista Luis de Haro y de él ­heredó un gran repertorio de pinturas que fue ampliando progresivamente con obras de gran calidad. Egbert van Panderen, también conocido como Paendere (Haarlem (?), 1580 o 1581 - 1637), fue un grabador holandés, que trabajó en Amberes entre 1606 y 1616, y en Ámsterdam en 1617. En 1606, se convirtió en miembro del Gremio de San Lucas de Amberes. El nombre de Van Panderen está principalmente asociado con la reproducción de gráficos. También realizó grabados basados en obras de Rubens. Su estilo de grabado se caracteriza por el uso de líneas duras con un alto contraste.
