Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book is part of the "Everyman" series, which has been totally re-set with wide margins and easy-to-read type. It includes an introduction, a chronology of the life and times of the author and a selection of criticism. It provides a blend of practical advice on fishing, anecdote, natural history, poetry and song. Taking the form of a dialogue between an angler, a falconer and a hunter, this book contains a wealth of advice to fishermen. In modern times, however, it is largely read for the attitude of life it embodies rather than the sport it commends - a celebration of a contented life in tranquil surroundings. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"The present edition is the first to offer the 1653 Compleat Angler followed by the 1676 version. The latter is purged of twenty-three years of misprints and furnished with an apparatus that should enable the interested reader to trace its textual evolution. The Introduction puts the work in context and solves some bibliographical problems. The Commentary is intended to help the reader by elucidating difficult references; it also illustrates Walton's unexpectedly large indebtedness to printed sources. The Compleat Angler is one of the most popular books ever published in the English language and it is reasonable to ask why a little fishing book, whose first edition fits comfortably into one's pocket, should be represented more than three centuries later by nearly four hundred editions or separate reissues. John Buchan offered one of the best appraisals of its literary quality and the fundamental reasons for its long-lasting popularity: 'With all his modest intentions he is a past master of the little country idyll. The pastoral drama, really a lost art since Theocritus, in spite of Roman, Italian, and Elizabethan revivals, is here restored to all its fresh and courtly grace. It is this which has made the book immortal. It is a difficult book to classify; part prose pastoral, commonplace-book, anthology of three dozen verses (including eight songs), log-book, fiction, and commentary on con-temporary political and religious attitudes. When it first appeared in 1653 the text of The Compleat Angler amounted to forty-two thousand words in thirteen chapters; its author revised subsequent editions and by the time he saw the fifth edition through the press in 1676 the book had grown to seventy-three thousand words in twenty-one chapters. (This was the last edition in Walton's lifetime and the one almost invariably reprinted.) Not only is the 1676 Compleat Angler more than half as long again as the original but it has been rewritten so thoroughly that its character has changed.
