rigide. Condition: Satisfaisant.

Original drawing for Charles Geniaux's novel Le choc des races. An illustration for the book's cover or dust jacket. Ink, charcoal and colored pencil on thin cardboard. Size: c. 24,5 x 20 cm. Japanese paper - painted in watercolor - mounted on the upper corners, colors overlapping on the original design. Signed. Charles Geniaux (1870-1931) was a French novelist, and one of the first 20th century writers that wrote in the so-called orientalist manner, setting their story in the Orient. Le choc des races, first published in 1912, is set in Tunisia. At the time, Tunisia was still a French colony. Georges Jordic-Pignon (1876-1915), often called simply Jordic, was a French illustratior, the pupil of artists Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. He is known as a children's book illustrator. Jordic's drawing represents the somewhat violent meeting between the colonized and the colonizer, with the colonized, the native Tunisian depicted in an orientalist manner, as a rather savage, uncivil individual. // Wir, das Antiquariat Steffen Völkel, kaufen und verkaufen alte Bücher, Handschriften, Zeichnungen, Autographen, Grafiken und Fotografien.
