The center of Balkenhol s work is the human form; he gouges his figures out of tree tru…nks and paints them, leaving behind traces of the tools, branch notches and splits in the wood. Stephan Balkenhol (b. 1957) is an internationally renowned German artist who concentrates on the human figure. He began his sculptural process of figurative wood carving in the mid-eighties -- as a response to the abstract, minimalist and conceptual approaches of the Hamburg School of Fine Arts.
