Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Cracking to rear hinge with netting exposed. Binding slightly loose. Dedication to front free endpaper, dated 1883. Boards have moderate shelf wear with some rubbing, fraying and corner bumping. Some moderate sunning and tanning, particularly to spine. Book has slight forward lean.

Minor fraying to spine ends. Dust dulled. Occassional some mild browning / foxing. Internally clean. All 12 plates with tissue guards. Provenance: Anthony David Estill (Ex Libris on front paste down) Joseph Wolf (1820 - 1899) was a German artist who specialized in natural history illustration. He moved to the British Museum in 1848 and became the preferred illustrator for explorers and naturalists including David Livingstone, Alfred Russel Wallace and Henry Walter Bates. Wolf depicted animals accurately in lifelike postures and is considered one of the great pioneers of wildlife art. Sir Edwin Landseer thought him ".without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived". Contents complete, the original end-papers, name and date 1857 to the front pastedown,all edges gilt, the gutta percha has deteriorated to leave the pages loose, the plates with tissue guards are clean and bright. A fair copy in need of a repair to the binding. Size: 4to. Book.

A limited edition but the limitation not stated (1/500?). This copy is #114. Hint of shelfwear at lower fore-corner, otherwise a fine copy. Note from verso of title page, "The negatives were taken by Mr. Frank Haes (a member of the Executive Committee) on the Eastman negative paper in McKellan's roller slide; the prints have been printed in Collotype by the Autotype Company, and are the first form of such negatives which have been published in England.".

Zoological sketchesis unequivocally one of the high pointsof nineteenth-century natural history illustration. The work was commissioned by the Council of the Zoological Society in 1852, to provide 'an accurate artistic record of the living form and expression of the many rare species of animals which exist from time to time in the menagerie'. The council chose Joseph Wolf, already well-known for his highly skilled published works, to depict these exotic animals in the Society's Vivarium in Regent's Park. Wolf was born in 1820 in Mörz, Germany. He was trained as a lithographer in Münster, and arrived in London in 1848 where he worked as zoological illustrator in the natural history department at the British Museum. He contributed illustrations to John Gould'sBirds of Asia andBirds of Great Britain as well as illustrating important travel books by David Livingstone, Henry Walter Bates and Alfred Russel Wallace. The plates for Zoological sketches were originally issued monthly, with an accompanying temporary text for parts I-VII written by David William Mitchell, secretary to the Society. On Mitchell's death in 1859, Philip Sclater completed the work, selecting the subjects and writing both the initial letterpress and then the final published text, which was issued with the thirteenth and final part.
