Fabian. appendix. science fiction. short stories. american literature. ~ Widely celebrated for his contributions to the weird fiction field~as author, editor and especially, co~founder in 1939 of Arkham House~August Derleth was also one of the earliest proponents of science fiction as a literary genre in its own right. And to make the case, over a seven~year period just after World War II, beginning with the critically praised Strange Ports of Call (1948), he edited nine discriminating sf anthologies~each of which effectively demonstrated that science fiction had long ago transcended its "pulp~ghetto" origins and merited both a wider audience and informed critical attention. Following which, in the early '60's, he announced plans for yet another sf anthology, New Horizons, even getting so far as to select most of its contents, though he was unable to see it into print before his untimely death in 1971. Now, as a special tribute to its founder's efforts on behalf of science fiction, Arkham House~currently celebrating its 60th Anniversary year~brings you its first sf anthology and Derleth's last (newly completed by Joseph Wrzos, a former editor of Amazing Stories). The contents of New Horizons clearly reflect some of the editor's early preferences and taste in pulp sf, even some of his favorite subjects and writers, selected primarily from the pages of now historic golden Age pulps like Hugo Gemsback's Amazing Stories, and Astounding Stories, when the latter was edited, first, by F Orlin ("thought~variant") Tremaine and, subsequently, by John W. ("Don A Stuart") Campbel], Jr. And for good measure, since Derleth himself often included some "new" fiction in his reprint sf anthologies, it's only fitting that a few heretofore unpublished tales also be added to New Horizons, stories akin to those he himself might have chosen. Such as David H. Keller and Paul Spencer's "The Purblind Prophet," a "Taine of San Francisco" story, in which the diminutive private eye takes on his most impossible case yet : how to change a "fixed" future in order to save a client's ladylove from certain death! As well as the newly discovered, never~before~published "Countries in the Sea," a tale of Atlantean global menace, written by Derleth himself and his lifelong friend Mark Scharer, in the early days when both writers, still young, had just eagerly set out on the perilous road to literary fame, if not to fortune.

With over 450 pages, and a large, 8 × 12 size, this collection covers the entire artistic career of Hannes Bok. Key works also feature detail views. Edited by Joseph Wrzos. Introduction by Ray Bradbury. Many b/w illustrations and loaded with gorgeous full-page, full-color prints. Published October 2012. Hannes Bok (1914-1964) is considered to be one of the premier fantasy illustrators of the twentieth century. Dying young, he left behind a mostly uncollected array of wonderful and astonishing black-and-white pulp illustrations, a dozen or so dazzling dust jacket covers, and an as-yet-undetermined number of gorgeous color paintings, most of them quickly snapped up early by connoisseurs and still under heavy guard in private collections. And it was only due to the efforts of a few dedicated admirers, who published the first Bok collections, that the richer part of his legacy still survives. But even these early Bok collections are out of print and going for high prices in the collectors' market. As a consequence, none of Bok's artwork is currently available to the general public, and there is still much that has never been reproduced in the first place. Hannes Bok: A Life in Illustration redresses this by bringing back into print not only his out of print artwork but many newly discovered drawings and paintings, reproduced here for the first time. In addition, A Life in Illustration also includes a rich selection of critical and biographical background material, including a nostalgic memoir by Ray Bradbury, incisive tributes by fellow artists, a newly uncovered letter of encouragement by Maxfield Parrish, and Bok's own concise autobiography, as well as his long unavailable essay, "Hannes Bok Looks at Fantasy Art and Illustration," a cogent elaboration of his artistic credo. Hannes Bok: A Life in Illustration could well prove to be the definitive edition honoring his life and work. Edited by Joseph Wrzos. Introduction by Ray Bradbury. (illustrator).

First edition. Limited edition. Signed by the author and the editor. Publisher's original black suede, illustrated to the lower board, a pictorial onlay to the upper board and gilt titles to the spine, in the Jacob McMurray designed dustwrapper, and pictorial silk and black cloth slipcase. Brown satin ribbon page marker. Illustr…ated endpapers, with an A5-size colour plate of Hannes Bok's 'Earth Goddess' loosely laid in. Tissue-guard preceding the title page. Richly illustrated throughout with black and white drawings and colour illustrations by Hannes Bok, with various artwork galleries reproducing Bok's pulp magazine cover artworks. An excellent fine copy, the binding square and firm, the suede is bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout, and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very near fine dustwrapper, which has just a touch of spotting to the underside, and is otherwise without fading, loss or tears. Housed in the lightly rubbed, structurally sound slipcase, which has a tiny scuff to the backstrip. A lovely example. Issued in an edition of 200 copies, from which this example is numbered 100 and signed by the contributing authors Stephen Fabian, Bob Eggleton, Jill Bauman, Jason Eckhardt and Stephen Hickman in blue and black ink on the colophon. Facsimiles of Hannes Bok and Ray Bradbury's signatures in black are also present on the colophon. Nominated for the 2013 World Fantasy Award and the 2014 Locus Award for 'Best Art Book'. Widely regarded as a maverick of science fiction illustration, Wayne Francis Woodard (1914-1964), best known by the pseudonym 'Hannes Bok' (derived from Johann Sebastian Bach), was a Hugo Award-winning illustrator, artist and amateur fantasy writer. He first achieved career success as a 'Weird Tales' artist thanks to a 19-year-old Ray Bradbury, who he had first met in 1937 upon moving to Los Angeles. By summer 1939, the two had become friends, so much so that Bradbury carried samples of Bok's artwork to New York City to put forward to magazine editors at the first World Science Fiction Convention. Farnsworth Wright, editor of Weird Tales, accepted Bradbury's proposal and debuted Bok's illustrations in the December 1939 issue. From there, his art featured in more than 50 issues of the magazine until March 1954, graced the cover six times from 1940-2, and saw five of his short stories and two poems published by the magazine between 1942-51. His unique style garnered widespread acclaim and admiration, though his resistance to publisher and editor interference lost him many commissions. This comprehensive volume reproduces much of Bok's portfolio that has since become unavailable to the general public, and includes the artist's own concise autobiography and long-unavailable essay 'Hannes Bok Looks at Fantasy Art and Illustration'. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Signed by Author(s).
