One of the early Italian editions of a historical work by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), translated from Latin by Lodovico Domenichi (1515-1564), renowned for his editions and translations of classical authors. This work is composed of brief biographies of illustrious military leaders, both ancient and modern (i.e., from the Middle Ages to Renaissance). Second edition. León de Francia, Guillielmo Roville, 1562-1561. En 4º (217 x 152)mm. (12), 263 pp. 137 emblemas grabados en madera. Encuadernación en piel del siglo diecinueve. Segunda edición en español, la primera impresa en 1558 sin ilustrar. Los 137 emblemas grabados están abiernos en madera por Barnard Salomón. A partir de la página 221 y con portada propia: "Divisas o Emblemas heróicas morales hechas por el noble varón Gabriel Symeon". El texto está escrito en forma de diálogo entre el autor y su amigo Ludovico Demenichi, en una supuesta conversación ocurrida en 1551 cuando ambos se encontraban residiendo en la corte del Duque de Florencia, mediante el que describen a la sociedad aristocrática italiana. Se representan en emblemas sus divisas, armas, motes y blasones. A cada emblema le acompaña un texto explicativo. "El diálogo del escritor italiano constituye [.] un testimonio de primera mano para comprender determinadas convenciones y modas de la sociedad cortesana renacentista así como los ideales heroicos que manifiesta la clase dirigente de la época" (Jesús Gómez). A través de esta obra, además, podemos obtener información privilegiada sobre muchos protagonistas de la nobleza italiana de la primera mitad del siglo XVI, algunos de los cuales Paulo Jovio conoció y a cuyo servicio estuvo. La obra posee además un innegable valor histórico, pues en ella el autor ?como testigo excepcional por su condición de consejero y cronista de grandes señores? recoge testimonios sobre destacados acontecimientos de aquel momento. No es de extrañar por ello que la obra obtuviera un rápido éxito editorial, con varias ediciones en el italiano original y traducciónes al español, francés e inglés. La primera edición apareció en italiano en 1555, y en español vio la luz en la temprana traducción de Alonso de Ulloa de 1558. La primera edición ilustrada apareció en 1559; la presente es la primera edición ilustrada en español. Portada restaurada en el margen inferior sin afectar, leve mancha en el margen interior, papel ligeramente tostado. 217x152mm. (8½x6").

II, Parte 2ª portada con gran escudo heráldico, a la vuelta las licencias + 426 folios, texto a dos columnas, grandes letras capitulares con dibujos, los folios 161 y 168 del primer tomo están muy bien reproducidos a mano imitando la letra de imprenta, incluida una letra capitular con su dibujo, las páginas 107, 166 y 223 mal foliadas, la portada del segundo tomo esta con injertos por los márgenes, y 13 págs. mal foliadas, al folio 214 injerto en la esquina inferior derecha afectando algunas palabras, 2 pequeños sellos anterior propietario casi borrados. Pleno pergamino época, titulo manuscrito en lomera, algunos folios con marca de grasa sin afectar a la lectura. Existe 1 ejemplar en la Bibl. De Castilla ¿ La Mancha, Sig. SL/1483.

Preciosa coleccion de retratos de personajes de la historia y las letras. Alrededor de 200 grabados. Falta portada y una hoja del primer volumen. El segundo completo (pero con el pliego X, repetido y falta el Y), solo con perdidas en las tres últimas hojas de indices. Todo el cuerpo de las obras en excelente estado de conservación, y los retratos son magníficamente grabados sobre madera. En 8 de ellos no se imprimió el retrato (de edición), solo la orla. Uno de los retratos es un dibujo a lápiz de época (Fernando Gonzaga). Pergamino moderno. Preciso examinar. 2 tomos en 1 volúmen. Fº.

Basiliae (Basel), Froben, August 1531. Small 8vo. Very nice later (ab. 1700) full brown morocco, probably Italian, with gilt borders to boards, back richly gilt. Old library-label to lower back, scratch to front-board, white chalk-like staining to back-board. Internally a bit of brownspotting, but overall good condition. Contemporary marginal notes to three pp. Woodcut printer's device to t-p. and last leaf, a few woodcut initials. 144, (6) pp., 1 f. w. printer's device. With the ex-libris of Jeffrey Norton. Very rare Froben-edition of the first work by the Renaissance-historian Paolo Giovio. All early editions of this work are very rare.Giovio was a gifted philosopher, medic and historian. He was born in 1483 in Come (Lombard) and was as controversial a person as he was an author. He died in 1552 in Florence, and this particular edition is thus printed in his lifetime. Three other editions appeared in his lifetime, all printed in Rome, in 1524, 1527, 1528, but the 1531-edition is the only one by as prominent a printer as Froben.Giovio was very strategic and succeeded in connecting himself with the Medici-family, especially Giulio Medici, who was later elected Pope (Clement VIII) when he became Pope, Giovio was assigned chambers in the Vatican and in 1528 he was announced Bishop of Nocera. Giovio wrote historical and biographical works and essays these works are said not to be taken as authorities, but in their entirety and with proper reservation they do have real value, especially because he gives a rich and lively picture of Italy in his own time. He gives indispensable accounts of the manners and lives of the people of Renaissance Italy. As a writer and clergy he played quite a big role in Renaissance Italy.This his first work is a rarity and plays a special part in his body of writing, as it is neither historical nor biographical. It deals with the types of fish that Romans eat and tells how to prepare them, it is thus of great importance to anyone interested in the lives and customs of the time, and it is sometimes counted among the earliest of cook books. It also provides names of the fish and details of where they can be found, and where the best of each species is most easily found, making it of real value to the ichthyologist" this work is also said to contain the first reference in history to American fish. The work was translated into Italian in 1560, eight years after the death of Giovio.Not in Simon. BMC (NH) only mentions the 1561 edition and the 1560 translation. Wood p. 359: "a very early treatise on Roman ichthyology" ("the rare" 1524 first edition).
