From Roman emperors in their country villas to Europe's ruling classes with their hunting lodges and rural estates, people have always sought to escape the mundane realities of life. In the America of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, industrial tycoons headed for the mountains, while in eighteenth-century Europe, perhaps the most extravagant escape was that of Queen Marie-Antoinette, whose Petit Hameau at Versailles enabled her to play at being a milkmaid. In modern times, a fortunate few have managed to achieve a similar state of bliss by retreating to homes in some of the world's most beautiful locations. Here, in mountains, hills, woods and waterscapes, these Lucky people have found rest and relaxation - somewhere to restore their spirits and recharge their batteries. Great Escapes celebrates each glorious hideaway in turn, be it a tiny fisherman's cottage on the Moroccan coast, a chalet in the Swiss Alps, a secluded Welsh farmhouse, or a concrete and glass water tower in a wooded copse. In every case the result is idiosyncratic - a dazzling combination of environment and the proprietor's personality. These are homes whose atmosphere will haunt you long after you have closed the pages of the book. Size: 4to.

Hard Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Colour Stamp Reproductions, Map, Photos (illustrator). 1st. Text material for this record of Norfolk Island stamp issues was provided by the island Philitalic Socierty. It was not until June 1947 that the island --- notorious as an early convict settlement and later noted for the resettlement from Pitcairn Island of the descendents of the Bouny mutineers --- produced its own stamp issue. Tasmanian, NSW and finally Australian Commonwealth stamps were previously used. Since then stamps issued in the island have attracted collectors world-wide. Subjects covered have been wide ranging, from island scenery, architecture, birds, botanical subjects, wild life, historical associations, ships, transport, aircraft and significant occasions/events/organisations. 88 pages, short history of island and its postal history with each stamp issue then chronologically described and illustrated, with various denominations in full colour. Some issues were of only one stamp while another reached 17 (butterflies) and four were of 16 stamps. Descriptive text for each issue includes a data list coveing issue date, technical info, designer, paper type, printer and printing process. Other illustrations include few photos with colour map at back. Colour laminated covers, stamp selection at front, VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
