Diese Änderungen werden unmittelbar durch die Tatsache begründet, daß eben in den Erscheinungsjahren der drei aufeinander folgenden Ausgaben des Buches auch in der polnischen Kunst und kunstwissenschaftlicher Forschung eine beachtenswerte, bis auf den heutigen Tag noch nicht abgeschlossene Arbeit an neuem Durchdenken und an neuen Entdeckungen lebendiger Werte des kulturellen und künstlerischen nationalen Erbes wie auch in unserer Stellung dazu stattgefunden hat. Für die Entwicklung der neuen, in ihrem Inhalt sozialistischen, in der Form nationalen, polnischen Kunst sind von erstrangiger Bedeutung die Kenntnis der Entwicklungsgeschichte der Kunst in ihren reifsten realistischen Erscheinungen sowie das aus dieser Quelle strömende Bewußtsein von dem Bestehen eines lebendigen Zusammenhanges mit dem fortschrittlichen Erbe unserer Kultur. Der Vertiefung dieses?Bewußtseins in den Kreisen schaffender Künstler und Kunsttheoretiker, und vor allem seiner Ausbreitung in den weitesten Schichten des Volkes soll auch die vorliegende Massenausgabe der Fünf Jahrhunderte polnischer Malerei dienen.
