8vo; cloth-backed illustrated papered boards; no dustwrapper; pp. 140; lacking frontis. illustration; full-page and text illustrations throughout; maps. Boards somewhat rubbed and worn; earlier owner's bookplate and two ownership inscriptions to front endpaper; some foxing. 'Four authors, each an authority on certain branches of African native art and crafts, teamed together to produce this book. "The Art of Africa" purports to provide a background of understanding to the ethnological, environmental and inspirational sources of indigenous African art. Against this background appears, in the form of drawings by the authors and by Madame Lucy Jaques Rosset, visual representation of some hundreds of the objets d'art themselves, supported by accurate and descriptive text.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A small but visually arresting book published in South Africa in 1959. Illustrated throughout. Tipped-in illustration of the eland on the frontispiece. Inscribed on the ffep by Jack Grossert (one of the authors) in 1959. This copy belonged to longtime Cambridge Massachusetts proprietor of Hurst Gallery, Norman Hurst (as evidenced by his embossed ownership seal on the ffep). Fine in a very good dust jacket (small wedge missing front cover upper left; in Mylar). A nice copy of a deceptively elegant little book. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. One of the authors, Walter Battiss, has signed and warmly inscribed the book to Frank Bradlow, to whose library this book belonged. Battiss died in 1982. The dust jacket is slightly shelf rubbed and edge worn, but remains whole and intact. Likewise for the boards, which are strong and sturdy. Internally, Battiss's inscription is on the front end page, and a previous retailer's sticker is under the front board. The end pages are tanned and lightly foxed, but this does not extend into the rest of the book, and the rest of the pages within are crisp, clean and complete. Tightly bound and presents handsomely in cellophane. JK. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Signed.
