Geist (1902-1942) war ein deutscher, halbjüdischer Komponist und Musikschriftsteller, der 1939 ins Exil nach Litauen ging, wo er 1942 von den Deutschen ermordet wurde. Nachdem er durch SS getötet worden war nahm sich seine zweite, litauisch-jüdische Ehefrau das Leben. Seine Kompositionen, von denen bis dato keine publiziert worden war, überlebten nur, weil der litauische Violinist Vladas Varcikas nach dem Selbstmord von Geists Frau in einer verwegenen Aktion in die bereits von der Gestapo versiegelte und geplünderte Wohnung der beiden einbrach und Geists Manuskripte rettete und an einem sicheren Ort versteckte. Dort blieben sie bis man sich im sowjetischen Litauen der 1960er-Jahre des Komponisten und seiner Werke erinnerte. Zu seinem 100. Geburtstag wurde erstmals dort sein Musikschauspiel "Die Heimkehr des Dionysos" aufgeführt. und 2007 erschien eine CD mit Einspielungen von Kammermusik und Liedern Geists.
